David Arquette files for divorce from Courteney Cox

It looks like David Arquette and Courteney Cox are officially just friends, as the actor has finally filed for divorce from the "Cougar Town" star, citing irreconcilable differences.

Arquette's legal team filed the divorce papers in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday — the same day he arrived in Israel to visit Jerusalem and then Tel Aviv. The trip seems to be a spiritual one for Arquette, who had his bar mitzvah — at the age of 40 — at Israel's Western Wall on Monday. "I had my Bar Mitzvah today," Arquette, whose mother was Jewish, tweeted following the ceremony, noting: "Finally I'm a man."

Apparently, Arquette was considering filing the legal documents for several months prior to when he made it official last week. Next to his signature on the divorce papers, in two spots, is the date March 23, 2012.

The news of the Arquette-Cox divorce broke on Tuesday, which would have been their 13th wedding anniversary. However, the couple, who met on the set of "Scream" and married in San Francisco three years later, had announced their separation in October 2010 following months of tabloid reports linking them to other people. In a statement at the time, they noted that they were considering it a "trial separation" and that it "dates back for some time."

Interestingly, in the divorce papers Arquette lists their separation date as December 31, 2011.

An odd couple from the start, Cox and Arquette — whose daughter Coco will turn 8 tomorrow — openly discussed going to couples therapy during their marriage with Cox telling InStyle, "We're not lazy about our marriage. We have the same arguments we've had for years." However, when they split, Arquette admitted to Howard Stern he was hoping they would work things out. But things seemed to go downhill quickly from there with single-again Arquette hitting the party scene pretty hard and ending up in rehab. By the time he returned to "The Howard Stern Show" for a follow-up interview in September 2011, he noted that he and Cox, 47, were officially "in the friend zone now" and he talked about dating other women.

Although Cox and Arquette still run a production company together and often reunite for Coco — when Arquette competed on "Dancing With the Stars" last fall, mother and daughter were cheering for him in the audience on more than one occasion — Cox pretty much said the marriage was over during an interview earlier this year. When she appeared on "The Howard Stern Show" in January, the shock jock asked if there was any chance she would rekindle the relationship. After saying, "Um, this is awkward," she politely replied, "There is a huge part of me that … there's a huge part of my life with David, no question, but I feel like right now our relationship is probably better than it would be if we lived together, it's definitely better than it used to be. We communicate better, we have much more respect for each other, we listen. It's hard."

And now it's over.
