Adam Levine Gets Battered and Bloody in the Name of Music

Adam Levine has the reputation for being a very well-groomed man. Whether he's sitting in his spinning chair on "The Voice" or walking on the red carpet, wearing a white T-shirt or something straight off the runway, the 33-year-old Maroon 5 frontman always looks … perfect. So we got a little giddy when we saw new photos of him, looking battered and bloody, while filming band's latest music video, "Payphone."

Of course the tattooed heartthrob wasn't really hurt — it's the magic of makeup, folks — but he was looking a little rough around the edges while he ran around the Downtown Los Angeles set on Thursday. Levine was made to look like he had a bruise around his eye, scratches on his cheek and a swollen lip that was oozing blood.

"Rough morning," he joked in a tweet from the makeup room, along with a close-up photo of his bloody face.

Shunning his typical rock star chic style for the video shoot, Levine was dressed in businessman attire, complete with a tie and glasses. He was on the run with a pretty lady, who herself was working the fake blood, sporting a skinned knee.

In another scene for the "Payphone" video, Levine was behind the wheel of a classic Shelby Cobra sports car. He was being pursued by police and raced off in a blood-splattered shirt.

The catchy song, which he performed with his band on "The Voice" earlier this week, features a cameo by rapper Wiz Khalifa. It is one of the tracks on Maroon 5's upcoming album Overexposed, which is due out on June 26.

Another project Levine has in the works is a role in season two of the FX series "American Horror Story." Show creator Ryan Murphy spilled some details about the singer's part during a panel to promote the show on Wednesday. "He's a sexy guy, so he needs to play a sexy guy — but the guy that is different than who you think he would play," Murphy said. "I pitched him the part and he listened, slack-jawed, and simply said, 'I'm in.' The second season is fun, sexy and baroque. It has a lot of meat to it; it's a really gritty part. He's with a girl, and they play characters called The Lovers."

And, knowing the show, there is certainly the potential to once again see Levine covered in fake blood.
