Drew Barrymore: ‘I’ve Never Had a Beach Body’

Drew Barrymore may have spent her whole life surrounded by Hollywood types, but she’s not jumping on the latest bandwagon where famous actresses get their pre-baby bodies back in no time flat.

"I'm still working on it, but I'm not worrying about it. We live in a society where everyone's like, 'Look at how amazing she looks two weeks out.' I don't want to be on that hamster wheel; that's hell,” Barrymore, who gave birth to daughter Ivy in late September, confesses to Good Housekeeping. “I'm never going to have the kind of body that makes me excited about bikini season. I've never had a 'beach body.' But I want to feel like I'm showing up and doing my best. My goal is to be nice to myself, gentle toward myself, during this process. It's such a sacred time."

The actress, who married Will Kopelman, the son of former Chanel CEO Arie Kopelman, last June, has another secret to keeping up her confidence when it comes to looking good.

"I think that being happy makes the biggest impact on your physical appearance,” she shares in the magazine’s February issue. “Of course I want to look good in clothes. And it never makes me feel good when somebody who has an insane figure tells me, 'I eat whatever I want.' I'm like, 'Thank you so much for making me feel like crap.' I know if I eat whatever I want, I will not look amazing. So it's all about balance for me.”

Fun Facts You Didn't Know About Drew Barrymore

And 37-year-old Barrymore isn’t striving to be a 10 either. “I don't want perfection; I don't actually believe in it. What I've learned along the way is, work with what you have; embrace what you've been given. Don't fight against it."

Instead, the newlywed and new mom is embracing the new family she’s been given, one that she took her time cultivating. Well, by Barrymore’s standards at least.

Though the two married after dating for 18 months and Barrymore was pregnant at the time, the relationship certainly seemed to have a more stable start than the “Charlie’s Angels” star’s other marriages. Back in 1994, when she was 19, the actress swapped vows with Jeremy Thomas in the L.A. bar that he owned after six weeks of dating, and then filed for divorce two months later. By 2000, Barrymore was back in love, this time with MTV funny guy Tom Green. They took the plunge on July 10, 2001 … and split five months after that.

But Barrymore insists things were different when she struck up a relationship with hubby number three.

“For the first time, I didn't enter a relationship like, Oh, my God! I'm so in love, let's go forward," she says, referring to her old ways. "This was a much more thoughtful and slow and sober process. It felt clearheaded and rational."

And there’s a reason the first gift Kopelman ever gave her when they first started dating was a compass. “Will is my North Star.”
