Wesley Snipes To Serve At Least Two-And-A-Half Years

TAMPA, Florida -- Wesley Snipes will indeed spend time behind bars, after being sentenced to three years in prison on tax charges on Thursday.

The U.S. Attorney's office in Tampa, Fla., has confirmed to Access Hollywood that the actor will serve at least 85 percent of his sentence - which is approximately two-and-a-half years behind bars.

However, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's office said Snipes was "just getting into the system" after yesterday's sentencing and it was unknown when he would begin his sentence.

Typically, it can take 30 to 60 days after sentencing for an individual to begin serving time.

It was also unknown at which facility Snipes would be serving his sentence.

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges said Snipes exhibited a "history of contempt over a period of time" for U.S. tax laws, and granted prosecutors the three year sentence they requested - one year for each of Snipes' convictions of willfully failing to file a tax return.

Snipes apologized while reading from a written statement for his "costly mistakes," but never mentioned the word taxes.

"I am an idealistic, naive, passionate, truth-seeking, spiritually motivated artist, unschooled in the science of law and finance," Snipes said.

This is a shame. Many people fail to file but they do not all wind up in jail. What is really going on, I wonder. I hope he was singled out due to race... but he's getting six times the sentence that Martha Stewart received. Hmm, successful black male vs. successful white woman. I'm white, BTW. Wesley, u r in our prayers. Dunno why convicted kid diddlers serve less time than

Gottcha, you have a good point. The U.S. Postal Service is also not an agency of the United States Government. But that does not stop the Fed's from pursuing mail fraud charges. In fact, the Fed's are the only agency that can. Snipes is very fortunate. He could have been sentenced based on both time he didn't file, and the amount of money involved. He averted a big hi

Well Gottcha all that is very interesting. But, the reality of your statement is false. Try not to pay your taxes and you will be arrested, photographed and finger printed. Then it gets worse and,yes ,you sometimes go to jail for it.
