UCLA Medical Center Workers To Be Fired For Looking At Britney Spears' Records

By Access HollywoodMarch 14, 2008, 4:48 pm PDT

At least 13 employees are expected to be fired from UCLA Medical Center over allegedly viewing Britney Spears' confidential medical records, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Six other workers have been suspended, according to the paper, and six additional workers, who are doctors, will be punished for looking at Britney's records, a source familiar with the situation told the paper.

However, according to the new report, this is not the first time that workers have been reprimanded for peering at Britney's medical files.

A handful of employees were caught reviewing her files after she gave birth to Sean Preston at a UCLA medical facility in 2005. Those viewings resulted in the firing of several employees.

"I feel like we do everything that we possibly can to ensure the privacy of our patients and I know we feel horrible that it happened again," the director of human resources at UCLA's Santa Monica hospital, Jeri Simpson, told the LA Times. "It's not only surprising, it's very frustrating and it's very disappointing."

The Times reported that UCLA officials sent a memo the day Britney was hospitalized on January 31, reminding employees not to review medical records unless their job required them to do so.

Viewing a person's medical records is a violation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, known as HIPAA.

Because HIPAA is federal law, a person who violates it can be subject to fines, or in more serious cases even imprisonment, a source in the medical field told Access Hollywood.

The employees who are set to be axed from UCLA did not view Britney's recent medical records, but rather ones from previous hospital visits, a source told the LA Times.

Those who viewed Britney's information are believed to have left an electronic trail, which was traceable, the paper reported.

This is what tells me why I should never be a celebrity. Papz should just leave that girl alone. Pretty much no one cares what the hell she does, cause it's not news to us in knowing she's doing things everyone else does on their everyday life. Honestly, that is really crazy how those employees would look at those papers and be fired for it. What job will hire then again?

BOYCOTT NEWS ABOUT BRITNEY SPEARS!!! Has anyone realised that we are the cause of the papz following her around and taking her pics? If any of you care as much as you say you do you will boycott the news that is generated by her harassers. If no one reads the news or looks at her pics then it will cause them not to chase her because her pics will be of no value.

So....everyone got fired but the DOCTORS :) and all they got was a write up or a suspension. I suppose HIPPA applys only partly to them? If I were one of the fired employees, I would raise 6 kinds of hell for equal treatment. This is The USA, we all put our pants on the same way, doctors included.

Jay C honey, you need to learn how to spell let alone speak according to your typing below...How old are you like 6? My seven year old can spell better then you. The employees who were not directly involved with brittany's care should be punished to the full extent...This is a HIPPA violation for all patients regardless of fame or not. The poor girl has been through enough as it is. Go
