NEW YORK - Tom Hanks is supporting presidential hopeful Barack Obama.

Hanks has taken to his MySpace.com page to pledge his support for Obama, who is competing to be the first black president. Obama, who faces rival Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic nomination, has also been endorsed by Oprah Winfrey, Bruce Springsteen and Scarlett Johansson.

"As an official celebrity, I know my endorsement has just made your mind up for you," the 51-year-old actor says in a short video titled, "Beware: Celebrity Endorsement."

"History with a capital 'H' is going to be made this November, no matter who the president-elect is. I want Barack Obama to be president of this country, a country that once said people with his skin color were only three-fifths of a human being."

Hanks, who won Oscars for his roles in "Forrest Gump" and "Philadelphia," explains his decision: "It's because of his character and vision, and the high road he has taken during this campaign. He has the integrity and the inspiration to unify us, as did FDR and Harry Truman and John F. Kennedy and even Ronald Reagan when they ran for the job."

The actor says Obama and Clinton have each "pretended to eat cheese-steak sandwiches and go bowling," "committed gaffes" and distanced themselves from supporters who could damage their campaigns.

But Hanks thinks an Obama presidency could bring about a "seismic shift," and "live up to the great promise once shaped by our founding fathers."

Signing off, the star says: "I'm Tom Hanks, I wrote and approved this message, and I'm now going to turn off the camera."

Damn, let's not talk about politics, but Hank's face; that dude better get an ice pack to take down the swelling, eat less salt, or just get a better publicist, to allow human looking photos only!

I really wish I knew what was going on in the presidential race. All the candidates make it so confusing when I am trying to make the right choice.

it's all about personality! Obama has it. I just hope the change he is talking about is for all Americans not just a minority of Americans. The people of this country do not care about anything but, personality! I say give it to them. They deserve it! Let's see if personality can save this country. It worked in Rome, very briefly and always before a political take over.

Pesccado, Tom Hanks like all other Americans has the right to choose whom he will vote for, he also has the right to voice it. your insult of a person you do not know shows more clearly an extreme and communistic overtone. it is our right to freedom learn your history and read the bill of rights. Idiot.............

It's about all Americans, not just the rich, or famous so if you have something fresh or new about him to say that is not illiterate, or just what you have heard on T.V. and has substance.. speak .... if not then listen and stop being like millions of people who only know important stuff like wwf Smackdown, or Racin Cars Bubba. Jesus Christ whats happened to the world.

Grant W do you even have a clue of anything about this freak? Most of the people or the majority who are voting for him are just looking at making history and don't have a clue about his past. So sad. Yeah we will see if he gets into office and ask the question again in a year after he has put the country more in the hole.

Tom is a wise man. He realizes that this country is full of hypocrisy and greed. Hopefully, Senator Obama will make a change.

I think this is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Having said that, I also think, we the people, have given government way too much power. The truly sad thing is, we don't seem to learn from our mistakes .
