  David is hanging onto his daughter's for dear life or for balance. Seriously, though it's very sad, he is probably a nice guy with a really huge problem that will eventually kill him if he doesn't get a clue pretty quickly. He isn't a youngster anymore and I'm sure his body is showing the damage from all the drinking.
