By no means is the 2007 version of “Hairspray” a hot mess. In fact, we were fine with its Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. We weren’t, however, pleased to see John Travolta on the Best Supporting Actor list that year. His fellow nominees were Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”), Casey Affleck (“The Assassination of Jesse James”), Philip Seymour Hoffman (“Charlie Wilson’s War”), and Tom Wilkinson (“Michael Clayton”). The clear outlier: Travolta, who delivered an embarrassingly bad performance as Edna Turnblad, a role perfectly executed by now-deceased drag queen Divine in the superior 1988 John Waters version.
