Arguably the saddest story to come out of “Teen Mom” is the fate of Amber Portwood, who famously punched her fiancé, Gary Shirley, in the presence of their daughter, Leah, during the show’s first season. After landing in and out of jail and court-ordered rehab, all stemming from that one incident, the 22-year-old decided to volunteer for a five-year prison sentence in June 2012 following a suicide attempt, in the hopes that being behind bars would be the impetus to be a better person and an even better parent to her 3-year-old. But until then, it’s been hard on the little girl, who doesn’t understand the situation. “When I tried to tell her, ‘Mommy’s in trouble,’ she got upset,” Shirley, who now has custody, told In Touch in October. “So, I’ve said, ‘Mommy’s at work,’ or ‘Mommy’s on vacation.’” less
