In her role as Ann Romano, she tackled tough topics – including suicide and birth control – while raising her two teen daughters, Julie (played by Mackenzie Phillips) and Barbara (Valerie Bertinelli), and managing her zany building superintendent, Schneider (Pat Harrington). In September 2012, a spokesperson for Franklin – who also appeared in movies, Alfred Hitchcock's “The Wrong Man,” among them – announced she was battling pancreatic cancer. She died at her Los Angeles home on March 1 of complications from the disease. She was 69. less
