Basinger filed for divorce from Baldwin in early 2001 after seven years of marriage and they soon began battling over then-5-year-old daughter Ireland in a fight that lasted for years. By 2004, the two had finally agreed to share custody, but had trouble actually sharing. Baldwin accused his ex of trying to turn their daughter against him and, in 2005, took Basinger back to court claiming she wasn’t making Ireland available during his court-ordered time with her. Perhaps no incident brought more attention to the troubled family than when an angry voicemail Baldwin left for Ireland was made public in 2007. In it, Baldwin – incensed that she had not answered his call at their agreed-upon time – called Ireland, then 12, a “rude, thoughtless pig” and threatened to “straighten your ass out.” Baldwin later apologized and said it was the stress of the endless custody battle and “parental alienation” that caused him to lose it. less
