LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Brooke White was not sent home on "American Idol" Wednesday night, despite her song performance the night before being mediocre at best.

Even though the curly haired blonde restarted her version of "You Must Love Me" from the musical "Evita," she was passed on to safety. It was Irish songstress Carly Smithson who was sent home, after being placed in the bottom two alongside Syesha Mercado.

"First of all I apologize for giving you a compliment last night; kiss of death, but let me tell you Carly, you can leave with your head held high," Simon Cowell told her.

"I've had the best time here," Carly said smiling through the bad news.

Though Carly was sent home, it was Brooke who was a major focus of Wednesday's "American Idol" elimination.

"Losing your way happens to the best people. It happened on the panel a couple of times last night actually," Andrew Lloyd Webber told Ryan Seacrest when asked to comment on Brooke's slip up. "I've seen it happen in the theatre myself. She's a very talented girl… I think there's a real future for her. I really fell for her because the dress rehearsal, she was flawless."

So why did Brooke make it through?

Simon Cowell suggest it was actually because of her slip up.

"Brooke, watching you back, I'm not surprised [you've made it to the next round] 'cause you made yourself human. And everyone makes mistakes," Simon said.

As for why Jason Castro made it through, despite poor remarks from the male judges for his rendition of "Memory," from "Cats," Simon said it had to do with his looks.

"Jason, you weren't very good, but you were charming," he said.

The night's broadcast also included a performance by Simon discovery Leona Lewis.

Neil Diamond will mentor the final five "American Idol" contenders next week.

it was completely fair... american idol is for amatuer singers in america... carly is one of them she can only be considered as a professional artist if she is in ireland since that is where she had a contract

I don't think Carly should've been a contestant in the first place. She previously had a recording contract and a CD, which isn't fair to those who didn't have one.

I think at this point Jason should of left I like Brooke I think she is an amazing singer but WTF?She did forget the words...and that was not the first time that has happened! Jason truly sounded HORRIBLE and I think Carly to me Rocked the house.I think that her tattoos are awesome.Besides that should have nothing to do with the way she sings...You wait n see she will be next years guest! =O) =O)!

It's all about popularity and image, not the true skills that singers possess. Case in point: Chris Daughtry, Tamyra Gray, Melinda Doolittle, etc. Then you look at the ones who had charisma and made it to the top ten: Taylor Hicks, Sanjaya Malakar, Nikki McKibbin, etc. Brooke should've gone, Carly should've been disqualified to start off with because she DID have a CD and

Shyesha and Carly to me, are the only ones who have a real voice. It's really sad to see my SD home girl sent home. Even thought I'm not a big fans of the Davids, I believe one of them will win the competetion.

I liked Carly, but her tattoo was a bit much. Brooke looks a the camera as if to say poor me vote for me because I screwed up, and Jason says vote for me because I can play to the camera with my eyes. Still someone had to go home.
