In 1981 Sissy Spacek won an academy award for playing Loretta Lynn in "Coal Miner's Daughter." Now, a little over thirty years later, actress Zooey Deschanel is taking the role to the Great White Way. The "New Girl" star is set to play the country music legend in the Broadway adaptation of the movie. At a show this week at the Grand Ole Opry, Lynn brought Deschanel up on stage, announced plans for the Broadway musical, and had Zooey sing the title song from the show.
Lynn's story is one that truly epitomizes the "American Dream." She came from an extremely poor family, and as the title suggests, her father worked the coal mines in Kentucky. When Lynn announced on stage that she'd be taking on the role, Deschanel said that Loretta had always been a hero of hers. We think Zooey was the perfect choice for this role, and here are a few of our reasons why!
She Can Sing! - It may seem like a minor little thing, but it's extremely important that Zooey's got the chops to pull off the singing, especially on Broadway. She'll be playing one of the most iconic stars of country music with one of the most recognizable and beloved voices of the genre. The fact that she's one half of a tremendous musical group herself, called She and Him, bodes well for the success of the show. She also sings the title song on "New Girl" during the opening credits sequence.
She's One of the New "It" Girls - The public really seems to have embraced the lovable and quirky brunette. She's appearing in commercials and popping up all over the place, much to the delight of her fans. Choosing Zooey for the role was a great business move too, since she's sure to put people in seats when the show debuts.
It's Hard Not To Root For Her - The story of "Coal Miner's Daughter" is ultimately a triumph of the human will to succeed, no matter what the odds, and the audience has to be able to invest in whoever is playing Lynn. Deschanel is so lovable, and so charming that it's hard to imagine her falling on her face. She has all the requisite acting and singing talents to really make this role special. Who knows, if it brought Spacek and Oscar, maybe the role will bring Zooey a Tony.
