"New Girl" actress, Zooey Deschanel, and Death Cab For Cutie star, Ben Gibbard, have ended 2012 by finalizing their divorce. The couple, who married in 2009, began divorce proceedings late last year, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. This year has seen many superstar couples ending their marriages. Here are three of the most famous divorces of 2012.
Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise
The world seemed to let out a collective gasp of surprise when that news broke that Katie Holmes had filed for divorce from her husband of almost six years. Nobody saw it coming, least of all the 50-year-old "Mission Impossible" star. Holmes pre-planned her announcement by setting up a new apartment, and throwing away her old cell phone so nobody could track her. It was expected that a messy custody battle over their daughter, Suri, would drag on for months, but the couple surprised everyone when tied everything up less than two months after the divorce papers were filed.
Jennie Garth and Peter Facinelli
Another surprise divorce in 2012 was that of Jennie Garth and Peter Facinelli. It was Facinelli who put the proceedings in motion back in March, and it hit his wife of 11 years hard. The former "Beverly Hills 90210" actress struggled to cope with all the media attention on top of the pain of the split but has begun to bounce back, and shed 30lbs of weight, as well as working towards a much healthier lifestyle.
Seal and Heidi Klum were married for seven years, but sadly, their union ended earlier this year. If anyone were to have an amicable breakup, Seal and Klum were the ones most expected to do so. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Seal made a claim that the stunning 39-year-old had had an affair with her bodyguard, Martin Kirsten, before their divorce had been made official. Klum was quick to deny the allegation, but confessed that she is now getting to know Kirsten "from a completely different side."
