"Audiences have a huge appetite for Hugh Jackman , for the character Wolverine, and the Wolverine that Hugh has created," Fox senior VP of distribution Chris Aronson said. "Almost half of the moviegoers polled said the film was better than expected."
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past -- starring Jennifer Garner and Matthew McConaughey -- debuted at No. 2 with $15.3 million from 3,175 screens, mirroring the $14.8 million bow of Sony's Made of Honor on the same weekend a year ago.

The previous weekend's top movie, Sony Screen Gems' Obsessed, fell to the third spot with $12.2 million. The thriller starring Beyonce Knowles and Ali Larter raised its 10-day total to $47 million.

Zac Efron 's comedy, 17 Again dropped to fourth this weekend, while Reese Witherspoon 's animated flick, Monsters vs. Aliens came in at No. 5 with $5.8 million this weekend.
