"We Can't Stop" talking about Miley Cyrus' twerking at the MTV Video Music Awards!
The spry singer kept the buzz about her booty shaking alive by talking about it during a recent interview with MTV News, and all the hype has her believing that she deserves a spot in the history books for flashing her tongue and defiling a foam finger. She even went so far as to compare her performance to those of MTV VMA icons, Britney Spears and Madonna.
"Madonna's done it. Britney's done it," she said. "Every VMA performance, everyone that performs. That's what they're looking for; you're wanting to make history, me and Robin the whole time said 'You know we're about to make history right now.'"
Miley Cyrus obviously wants her performance to be mentioned in the same breath as some of Britney's many magical VMA moments, which include the "I'm a Slave 4 U" snake dance, the striptease in a sparkly nude bodysuit, and the infamous Madonna kiss. However, Miley's messy twerk-fest might belong in the same category as a much different Britney performance.
In 2007, everyone was anticipating Britney Spears' big comeback at the MTV VMAs. However, her lackluster performance of "Gimme More" was a disaster of epic proportions. According to People, "The View" host Whoopi Goldberg said that she looked like a "bad stripper" with her busted blonde weave and ill-fitting outfit, and Dr. Phil called her tepid performance a "train wreck." The Daily News wrote, "Britney wasn't a bad girl. At the end of the performance, she was just bad."
Miley experienced a similar backlash, with Kelly Clarkson using the hashtag "#pitchystrippers" to presumably describe the singer's twerk-tastic performance. Brooke Shields labeled it "a bit desperate," and Tumblr users had too much fun creating memes that poked fun at Miley's giraffe-like tongue and an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction that left her with an odd-looking thigh gap.
So Miley's "We Can't Stop" performance and Britney's "Gimme More" mess have a lot in common since they both featured tepid tunes that probably won't withstand the test of time, awful outfits, and disastrous dancing.
Fortunately for Britney, now people have moved on, and they seem to remember her positive performances more than her one big miss. In fact, just last month Billboard named her "I'm a Slave 4 U" number the second best MTV VMAs performance of all time. It's possible that the memory of Miley's bad gyrations will also slowly fade away, but there's one big problem: People don't have a positive performance to replace that memory with. In other words, it might be a lot harder to make history than Miley realizes.
So do you think that we'll still be talking about Miley's twerking five years from now?
