When UC Davis campus police expelled pepper spray at students peacefully seated on the campus quad Saturday, viral videos of the incident ignited outrage among people around the globe -- including famous celebrities. On "The View" today, the five fillies cried foul over the police's over-reaction to the non-violent Occupy UC Davis protest. Joy Behar asked her fellow panelistas, "What are we In, a fascist state now?'
In a rare group hug of agreement, the usually quarelling quintet seemed perturbed by the police action. Whoopi Goldberg pointed out the students did not deserve to be pepper sprayed since they were not insulting the police by calling them "boneheads" or dissing their mothers. Barbara Walters called out the chancellor of the college, implying she should be fired, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd said guidelines should be established on appropriate use of the hot chili-based gas that can cause temporary blindness and breathing difficulties.
Likening the UC Davis incident to the shooting deaths of four students at Kent State, Behar declared, "This type of behavior cannot be tolerated by the police."
Like the vivacious vixens on "The View," celebrity tweeters did not hold back their fire.
"Police pepper spraying non-violent, quietly seated protesters at UC Davis? F***ing outrageous," tweeted "House" star Olivia Wilde, a political activist who has been involved with such groups as moveon.org and Artists for Peace and Justice.
"Mass pepper-spraying at UC Davis student protest: Colleges have become terrifying places lately," tweeted Kevin Smith a.k.a. "Silent Bob," an actor, director and screenwriter who was once booted from a Southwest Airlines plane for being "too fat to fly."
Film critic Roger Ebert shifted his critical eye away from the silver screen to real life, tweeting, "The Pepper Spray Outrage: Cops act as if OWS protestors are their enemies, not fellow citizens."
Meanwhile, more calloused comedians like Joan Rivers took a lighter view of the incident. "An 84-year-old woman at an 'occupy' protest was pepper-sprayed by police. She wasn't hurt, but it got rid of the old lady smell for an hour," she chirped.
Whether fans will think the edgy almost octegenarian's tweet was funny or insensitive is yet to be seen. Tweeters bashed Ashton Kutcher recently for flippantly siding with Penn State coach Joe Paterno before he knew all the facts swirling around the alleged multiple child rape scandal. The recently separated spouse of Demi Moore later apologized and posted a picture of himself next to an "I'm with stupid" sign, with the arrow pointing at his mortified face.
