Whitney Houston laid to rest at private NJ burial

WESTFIELD, N.J. (AP) — Whitney Houston was laid to rest Sunday at a brief private ceremony in New Jersey, the end of a weekend that saw the pop star's family and friends gather at a star-studded funeral to mourn her loss while celebrating her career.

Fans and onlookers gathered in several places along the route the motorcade took from the Newark funeral home to the cemetery about 20 miles away in Westfield, where Houston was buried next to her father, who died in 2003.

The 48-year-old singer died Feb. 11 in California, hours before she was to attend a pre-Grammy Awards party. No cause of death has been determined.

On Saturday, she was mourned at an invitation-only funeral at the church in Newark where she sang in the choir as a child. She was remembered by the biggest names in the music: Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys sang, and industry mogul Clive Davis was among those who spoke, as was Kevin Costner, Houston's co-star in "The Bodyguard."

The funeral was closed to fans, who were not allowed within blocks of the church. Still, many came to Newark to take part in what ways they could, some from as far as Miami and Washington, D.C.

Fans gathered again near the funeral home Sunday morning, and some even slowly ran alongside the hearse as it began the journey to Houston's gravesite. Several yelled out "We love you, Whitney" as the hearse, which had a black and white headshot of the star in a window, slowly drove away.

Barbara Davis, 53, of Newark, said she had been waiting outside the funeral home since 8:30 a.m., hoping to get a glimpse of Houston's final trip.

"To be here at her home-going is an honor and a blessing," Davis told The Star-Ledger of Newark.

Also among the crowd was Newark resident Eva Aquino and her two granddaughters, ages 10 and 13. All three stood on a street corner as the hearse passed by, and they used cellphones to snap photos of the procession.

The girls were wearing T-shirts and buttons of Houston that their grandmother had bought from vendors outside the funeral home Saturday.

"We came here and bought all these things of her to cherish the memories," said 13-year-old Nalani Velez of Kearny.

I have my own personal philosophy about how you live and what happens when you die. Sometimes it's "living" that is hard and not dying! You may think you would know the right path to take and what you would do in Whitney's shoes. Sometimes when God gives you a gift with a voice like an angel as Whitney, the responsibilities that go with it are so hard to carry - that you stray from the righteous path and loose your way. We can't even begin to comprehend the stresses and the every day life of a star like Whitney. How can anybody be so sure that we would not succomb to an easier way to cope with the stress she had on her plate. Let's just not judge this brilliant star and ask that God give us the strength to never stray away from a good life when we are stretched, and over-powered by career, home, contracts, concerts, always striving for perfection not only for yourself but a meriod of managers and mayhem - everyone looking and depending on Whitney to be "triple A perfect". When she stands before God, He is the only one she has to answer to. Not you or I or all of the interlopers who prey on her death for money like a pac of vulchars picking at her bones. Makes me sick to think of people who at her burial, would make it a circus, much like when Jesus was in the temple praying and the crowd were selling goods - and Jesus said - "you make the House of God and den of thieves. Rest in Peace Whitney and thank you for some of the most beautiful songs that never stop resounding still to this day in my head. I whistle them, sing them to myself, and always remember from whom they came.

I am saddened by the loss of Whitney Houston, and I will pray for her daughter, and her mother as they begin their jouney of greiving. As far as what issues she had in her personal life, it is what it is, personal. To those that want to throw stones at Whitney, please look in the mirror. See that reflection staring back at you? That reflection knows your every flaw as nobody and I mean nobody is without sin. God is good!! Always remember, God loves sinners too!! Heaven is full of them. If it weren't for sinners there would be no heaven. RIP Whitney Houston

Hey, I lost my father when I was 6. When I was 10 God took my 9 year old sister. In 2004 He called my brother to heaven. No one's talking about that.

what makes you think she went to Heaven?

You are right Paula. She surely wasn't a role model and by her behavior I don't think that she was very religious.

May the Lord hold you in his loving arms, he forgives all. Rest in Peace.

You have to ask for the Lord's forgivness BEFORE you die, before you can be forgiven of you sins. I feel sorry for her family and all those left behind and my prayers go out to them, but if you take drugs, prescription or not, and drink, then get in a tub and pass out and die, I don't think you had time to ask for God's forgivness! Only God knows the answer to that!

Amen Robyn. We do not know what happened and for all we know, she did ask for his forgiveness before she slipped away. Maybe HE had never left her heart to start with. No one knows and I pray that she had GOD in her heart.

Come on guys, druggie or not she was still a human being, with (like us all) strengths and weaknesses. Sure glad God loves us all unconditionaly, that does not happen here on earth.
      • Y 3 months ago
You're right, she was just a human being like the rest of us, so how come she is getting so much fanfare and glorification. It's silly. And ridiciulous. I'll reserve my salute for real heroes, like firemen and soldiers who die doing things that are ACTUALLY important.

People always have something to say about what everbody else is doing in their lives (look in the mirror and check yourself out). They need to stop being so judgmental because when you are call to go home to glory and be with God He is your judge and jury, not man. God is the one who decide if you can come threw those pearly gates. If people would learn to live their lives for themselves and not everyone else this world could be a better place to live. Rest in peace "Whitney" God share you with us for 48 years...now you are with our Lord and Savior singing praise to Him.... and guess what you are hanging out with the Best. ..

We don't really know for sure all the circumstanes for the Death of Whitney Houston, nor should we judge! Celebrity or not she was a human being like each and everyone of us! Family who loved her. We all have many skeltons of our own. I feel less media should of been involved. I feel deep sympathy for her mother and daughter. I also feel ALL Military families should receive the same recogintion as she did: for that matter any celebrity! They all had lives and stories that we will never know. We all know how they died defending us ! Thanks to Our Military for this privilage that you sacraficed for us! They are all HERO's in my book!!

Just because we have the "RIGHT' in this country to say what we want to, does not mean always should.....

Let me get this straight - the fans bought t-shirts and buttons comemerating Whitney OUTSIDE the funeral home? Somebody should really just knock these people upside the head.

It was a beautiful home going. I especially enjoyed the ending when the song played: "I will always love you."

There should be a city ordinance against people selling memoralibilia or anything where a funeral is being held. They should be put in jail for a while. A fine is just handing money over...they need also be required to take a seminar on respecting the dead and the mourners who are attending the funeral. This is appalling.

Just remember this Please. Say what you will however laid to rest was a Superstar. An iconic voice and True Entertainer. No matter what ever the rest....Whitney Elizabeth Houston could sing...The rest is for God to judge. Each of Us has done, has a family member or friend just as guilty of somenthing.....So All things being said. She was laid to rest in the style and manor befitting a Superstar.
