Viola Davis is having quite a year! Her next project "Beautiful Creatures" is a highly anticipated love story that will hit theaters just in time for Valentine's Day in 2013. Davis plays powerful channeler Amma in the supernatural love story. The film is anchored by newcomers Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert who play star-crossed lovers, Ethan and Lena. The groundbreaking star of "The Help" stars as Amma, a mystical seer and friend of Ethan's family.
Ms. Davis shot the magical movie on set in New Orleans. Of course "N'awlins" was just the stand-in for the fictional town of Gatlin, South Carolina where "Beautiful Creatures" takes place.
"Beautiful Creatures" is based on a bestselling series of young adult fantasy novels written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. Viola's Tony award-winning acting chops were in great hands. Richard LaGravenese directed the project. LaGravenese is the director and screenwriter of such diverse and acclaimed projects as "Freedom Writers," "P.S. I Love You" and "Water for Elephants." Viola is definitely on a roll right now and here is how she is rocking it.
Viola & Amma's Style
The full name of Viola's clairvoyant character in "Beautiful Creatures" is Amarie "Amma" Treadeau. Amma can communicate with her deceased ancestors known as "The Greats." To play the character, Ms. Davis traded in her trendy red carpet looks for a more earthy approach. Last year the Julliard grad caused a stir on fashion blogs when she wore her natural Afro hair to the Oscars.
Viola had a strong part in helping to create Amma's colorful look but doesn't consider herself a fashionista. Although she presented MaxMara's Nicola Maramotti with the Heritage Award at the 29th Annual Fashion Group International Night Of Stars she insists, "I have to say I'm getting better with the help of my husband and the stylists, I now feel like you know it's kind of my duty as a woman to just feel beautiful when I walk outside. Not to compete with anyone. To stay in my lane, but to feel like I'm being my cutest self."
Viola & Giving Back
Amma in "Beautiful Creatures" is community-minded. Similarly, Viola is presently involved with a number of important social causes. A 1988 graduate of Rhode Island College, the famous alum participated free of charge in a fundraising campaign ad. The school is trying to raise $50 million for much-needed renovations. Davis also addressed students at her Rhode Island high school with a rousing graduation speech that went viral earlier this year. Central Falls High then inducted her into their Alumni Hall of Fame. In addition, Viola co-hosted a Rape Treatment Center event honoring TV veteran Norman Lear and supported a luncheon for LA's Friendly House, a battered women's safe harbor.
Viola & Family
The characters in "Beautiful Creatures" uncover dark secrets about their families. When it comes to family in real life, Viola is all about hers. Her handsome husband Julius Tennon accompanies her everywhere, most recently to the 19th Annual ELLE Women in Hollywood dinner in Beverly Hills. Ms. Davis gushes when she talks about her 2-year-old daughter, Genesis. She says that her baby girl "loves telling people her name."
The movie "Beautiful Creatures" will hit theaters in February 13. Check out the latest trailer for this Southern Gothic tale where Viola's bewitching Amma whispers, "Our words, our language, can't explain all that is." We have no "Doubt" that Viola will "Help" make "Beautiful Creatures" a huge success.
