George Clooney returned as Dr. Doug Ross on Thursday's ER. Original cast member Julianna Margulies also reprised her role as his wife, nurse Carol Hathaway.

On last night's show, Dr. Ross tried to persuade a grandmother (guest star Susan Sarandon ) to donate the organs of her grandson to save two ailing patients. In the end, the hospital ends up getting her consent.

The boy's heart went to a dying mom at County General and the kidney went to "some doctor in Chicago, nurse Hathaway said.

Turns out, that "doctor" was their former colleague John Carter ( Noah Wyle ), who has relocated to the Windy City.

By the way, Dr. Ross and nurse Hathaway are still going strong: They now have twin daughters.

"It was a lovely experience -- just going back," Margulies recently told Usmagagzine.com of returning to the show. "It was like coming home. It felt really good."

Clooney left the show in 1999 to pursue a movie career; Margulies bid farewell a year later.

Several of the original cast members - including Wyle and Eriq La Salle - have returned to the NBC show as it approaches its series finale April 2.
