Team Damon for the win! In a total OMG! moment on "The Vampire Diaries" "We All Go a Little Mad Sometimes" (aired Nov. 15, 2012), Elena (Nina Dobrev) changes her mind and dumps Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) in favor of Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). Sure, there were other big things that lead up to this episode's ending, but this was the delicious piece of dessert Team Damon has been craving.
Like all great tragic heroines, Elena had to travel through and emotional hell on earth in order to unite with her true love. All of the turmoil, heartache, they dying and coming back to life as a vampire, have all been essential in her path to Damon. She spent most of the episode crying, thanks to the ghost of the vampire slayer - not Buffy, Connor Jordan (Todd Williams) . He took on various forms to torment her, as she slowly moved toward a decision to end her life.
She's locked up in a room with bricked windows and old paintings, thanks to her buddy Klaus. He snatched her from her porch when she was running away from Damon (because she thought he was the dead vampire hunter).
Even Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev) visited Elena, urging her closer to the line between sanity and madness. Katherine voiced what many viewers have thought to themselves over the years and let Elena know that she cries way too much. The only time Elena didn't cry was when she broke up with her boyfriend.
Elena spent most of the episode fuming at Stefan, between her hallucinations. She even stabbed him (ouch), thinking he was Connor. The couple sits on the porch outside Elena's house, where all major relationship shifts seem to occur. She tells him that something has changed between her and Damon. She says that ever since she turned into a vampire her feelings for Damon have been magnified. Magnificent!
Neither Stefan or Elena seemed to upset that their relationship was ending. Elena as a vampire does not hold the same appeal to Stefan, because now she's all mean and feisty. Neither of them discuss the cure that's still available and what will happen if and when Elena is cured and she returns to her vulnerable human self. Turning into a vampire may be a road from which she cannot return. As a couple they may never be able to move past this.
So what lead up to this historic breakup?
The fake breakup
Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) , Caroline (Candice Accola) and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) play a little game with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) called "We're pretending to breakup because a vampire-hybrid-wolf triangle will never work." Caroline dumps off a box of Tyler's stuff to his house being all "teen dramatic."
The vampire-hybrid-wolf trio decides to use Chris (Ser'Darius Blain) , an unsired hybrid to save Elena from Klaus. They promise to keep him safe and have his back. This means he'll be doomed Tyler and Caroline think they're smart, but even together they're no match for The Original.
Vampire slayer rising
After Stefan frees Elena from the locked room, with the help of Chris, Chris shows up at Tyler's. Klaus promises not to kill him and everyone thinks they've finally beat Klaus. Chris dies anyway, at the hands of Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). The only way to save Elena from the hallucinations is if the next vampire slayer rises. The only way he'll rise is if he kills.
Bridge over troubled waters
Meanwhile, at Wickery Bridge, Elena meets the final ghost of Connor, in the form of her mother Erin Beute. Her mother sweet talks her into accepting suicide as the only option. (How does Nina Dobrev sleep at night?) She tosses her day walker ring into the water, the same water where her parents died, and where she also died before she came back as a vampire.
Enter Damon. Her savior. He talks her down from her suicide mission, or so she thinks. Once Jeremy beheads the hybrid at Tyler's place the voices and the hallucinations stop. The sun rises and she starts to burn. Damon lunges for her and dives into the water with her to save her. She wakes up cozy in bed with Damon in her room. She credits him for saving her, but he confesses that it was not him. He reluctantly takes the "high road" by telling her the truth, and essentially helps her see that Damon is the one she wants to curl up with at night, not Stefan.
The professor who knew too much
The witch and the professor foreshadowing has been building.
* Professor Shane (David Alpay) tells Bonnie (Katerina Graham) that he is the only one who is going to be able to help soon.
* Matt (Zach Roerig) gets on Damon's good side by telling him the good Pastor Young was in constant contact with the professor, and made 10 phone calls to him on the day of the explosion. Was Pastor Young hypnotized by the mysterious professor?
