"The Vampire Diaries" came back running, decapitating and running for the mid-season premiere, Season 3, Episode 10, aired on Jan. 5, 2012. A romantic kiss, bromance, brotherly tension, and malfunctioning mystical objects made it all work.
Bonnie (Katerina Graham) returns to the witchy house to find a basement full of coffins and two ears filled with whispering voices. She opens a coffin and sees the necklace in the coffin wrapped around Klaus' hand, oh, dear viewers, it was just a dream.
Run, Doppelganger, Run
Elena (Nina Dobrev) gets healthy with a run. A hooded figure starts running behind her and she continues running, faster, faster, with the music building in a Jaws-like crescendo. She stops. He's gone. She turns around and bumps right into her. She is freaked out and feeling paranoid.
All that anger lands in a slap on the face of her ex-lover later on, when he tells her that what Klaus wants is not his problem.
The supernatural gal pals meet at the pub and commiserate about their fears. The witch shares her dream about the coffins. Meanwhile, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Alaric (Matt Davis) are drinking at the bar celebrating "Klaus-ageddon." Ric tries to pretend he still cares about grading papers and Damon flirts with guest star Justine Ezarik who tells them Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) got fired last week.
Damon plays darts, and his lips are a prettier pink than Elena's. Yes, it's hard not to notice. They flirt but as usual she backs off.
Klaus shows up sporting really bad hair. He's having a bad day and demands that they produce Stefan (Paul Wesley) or there will be consequences. Elena gets tough and tells him it sounds like a Klaus and Stefan problem. Tony (Zane Stephens), the jogger (or stalker?) is with the hybrid.
Jeremy is shooting beer cans with a crossbow. He's with with his new pal Tyler (Michael Trevino). Tyler gets cocky and tells Jeremy to shoot at him and he catches the arrow.
Witchy Woman, Witchy House, Part Duh
Bonnie realizes it's not stress but a witch premonition and goes to the house. She hears voices like in the dream. She goes to the basement and discovers not coffins, but Stefan who needs her help. He tells her the hybrid's weakness is his family. Ironically, it also appears to be Stefan's, who blew the chance to kill Klaus in order to save his own brother in the last episode.
Bonnie says she doesn't have enough power to hide four originals. Fortunately, the spirits of the departed witches do and they share Stefan's goal. Bonnie believes the witches are trying to tell her something about the coffin they cannot open. She thinks it holds the key to killing the original.
It's family time and Alaric and Elena are cooking. Jeremy says he's just passing through. She confronts him about his job. He says he's hanging with Tyler. They tell him he can't. Jeremy invites Tyler in. Noooo! Elena giving Tyler a hard time about being sired vs. being compelled. Tyler says he owes him for releasing him from a curse that was ruining his life. Tyler mistakenly believes he can still make his own decisions.
Jeremy receives a call from Klaus, who is getting no answers from Damon. Tyler takes off and Jeremy goes and stands in the road after removing his ring. Tony tries to run him down but Ric pushes him out of the way. He dies and comes back but is spitting blood. The magic just isn't what it used to be.
The jogger shows up in time to send the paramedics away and Jeremy shows up in time to decapitate the dude.
Family Affair, Another Kind of Bromance
The Salvatore brothers have a chat and a fight. Damon stakes Stefan until he confesses that he did what he did to save Damon. Damon says, "stop saving me."
The Long Goodbye
Jeremy says let's get out of here and leave this town. He's the only smart one in the bunch. Later Jeremy threatens Tyler with the crossbow and Tyler warns Jeremy to stay inside because Klaus is not done with him.
When he returns home Ric, Elena and Damon have a little chat with the 16-year-old. Damon compels Jeremy and sends him away to Denver. He tells him to leave Mystic Falls behind and not think twice about it.
Elena's New Deal
Not one episode can go by without Elena doing something impulsive. She gives Klaus Rebekah (Claire Holt), making a deal that her brother will be safe. Elena sticks it to the vampire when she tells him that his sister knows he killed their mother. He decides to stake her again and let her stay dead rather than face her wrath.
Something to Feel Guilty About
Damon confesses to Elena that he understands Stefan now because he did what he did to save Damon's life. Damon feels bad because he feels guilty again for wanting what he wants. He walks away, then he turns around and says, "No, if I'm going to feel guilty about something, I'm going to feel guilty about this." He grabs her face and they kiss. It's a lingering kiss, and one we've all been anticipating. Was it good for you?
