Turkish court charges Sarah Ferguson on orphanages

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A Turkish court on Thursday filed charges against Britain's Duchess of York for secretly filming orphanages in the country.

The court accused Ferguson in absentia of going "against the law in acquiring footage and violating privacy" of five children. She faces a maximum term of 22 1/2 years in prison if convicted. No trial date has been set.

Ferguson, the former wife of Britain's Prince Andrew, made an undercover trip to Turkey in 2008 to examine orphanages for a British television program. Secretly filmed images that were broadcast appeared to show children tied to their beds or left in cribs at an orphanage near the capital, Ankara.

It was not clear why it took more than three years to file charges against Ferguson.

Britain's Home Office declined to say whether any requests have been made to extradite Ferguson, saying its general policy was not to comment on individual cases. The Foreign Office said it expected "high legal and judicial standards to be observed," though it added that it would be "premature and inappropriate to speculate on possible outcomes at this stage."

I don't get it.. Is she being charged because she exposed torture and abuse, or because she invaded the torturer's privacy?

That is the charge but the real reason is the former.

i think the reason the turkey waited this long is because their wanting sarah to pay em they want money for her showing children getting abused and all it's like the children is rented out to her for show and when she didnt pay they probably decided to charge her i hope she gets out of it

The last thing these kids are worried about is privacy. It's more of the embarrassment or the Turkish Government and their international image than it is about the children.

Good for you Sarah! People who have status in this world should use it for the good. What could be better than exposing a country that would do such atrocities to it' s own children. Same goes on in other countries too, such as Russia, Romania, Ukraine, China ect...

Shouldn't the people who run the orphanage be held accountable? Not the actual government.
      • DireStraits 4 months ago
Both government and employees should be responsible because the government really runs them and hires help.

Why dont you all look at your own situations here in this country, I cant believe these posts here , this immoral woman has never done anything for the good of others, only when she got money for it. she exploited these children for her own enrichment. low life horse manure shoveler.

is anyone really surprised? this is turkey for crying outloud. the vast majority of this nation is third world at best. the turks have so much blood on their hands and they are very proud of it because due to the fact that they always seem to find a way to justify their madness.

Amen. As a Syrian Christian I cannot believe anyone supports the Turks who are trying so hard to bring a Muslim Brotherhood government into our secular Syria.

      This is Erdogan's Turkey!
You won't take the blame for the Armenian genocide of the Ottoman Empire!
You won't take the blame for the Kurdish genocide of modern day Turkey!
Now, the Turkish people are so weak... morally and truthfully... weak that the thin skinned Erdogan and his thin skinned crony government can't accept injustice when it comes to children.
      Turkey is doomed!

Stop trying to change the subject. It doesn't matter who busted Turkey out or why. The facts are, Your orphaneges abuse kids, and your government wants to imprison the person that publicized the truth. Quit whining.

What is worse: the breach of privacy by Ferguson or the breach of human dignity by Turkey?

Folks, in Turkey it is a crime punishable with prison time to "insult Turkishness" which is pretty broad in its application. When I lived there for 2 years (2001-2003) a taxi driver got 2 years for listening to a tape of Kurdish folk songs.........no kidding!

Although Turkey tries to project a progressive image, it's mainly for the benefit of the U.S., in order to keep the aid flowing. The aid, as shown by Sarah Fergusons story, doesn't make it to where it's needed. Turkey is no different than the rest of the Arab countries, and if the right amount of money is offered to the right people, the charges against Ferguson will go away. Democracy is a sham to Arab countries, used to earn aid from the West.

BUT the real question is what charges are being brought against whoever tied children to their beds or left children in cribs at an orphanage? Hmmm??

yeah, I didn' t think so....Turkey doesn't give a gobble about those kids , so stuff your charges Turkey!
