Even in today's era of social media, there's nothing like a good old-fashioned open letter -- especially for celebs who can't keep it to 140 characters!
The latest open letter-writer is Tori Spelling, who took to her blog to pen an angry response to Star Magazine. In the 814-word rant, Spelling slammed the tabloid for a recent cover story that reported that she and hubby Dean McDermott are splitting, and she went on to describe her 5 year-old son's terrified reaction when he saw the "divorce" headline in the supermarket checkout line.
While Spelling said she's "built up a pretty thick skin to the lies and trash talking" of the tabloids, she's not having it when it comes to her husband and kids.
"Keep them out of it!" she wrote. "You want to make inaccurate low blows at someone Star? Go for me! I can handle it. I always have. But don't do it to a man that has done nothing but loved me and our children. He has stood by me during the good times and held my hand through the darkest moments of my life. I'm so blessed to have him as my partner in life and love and he is the best father to our four children…"
While she nipped that one in the bud, this isn't Tori Spelling's first foray with an open letter. Check out these other celebs who've taken the open letter road.
Candy Spelling's Open Letter
Back during the said "darkest moments" of her life, Tori's then-estranged mom, Candy, blasted her in an open letter of her own. In a 2009 open letter to TMZ, Candy Spelling accused her daughter of turning her kids into props for her Oxygen reality show, "Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood."
Mama Spelling referred to Tori as a "middle-aged reality star" and wrote: "A big party wasn't how I envisioned meeting my granddaughter for the first time; but, hey, this is Hollywood, and my grandchildren have become reality show props, too …I didn't realize I was being set up for a two-parter, even though it was clear I was being invited to be part of a segment for my daughter's reality show."
Tori defended putting her kids on camera, telling Nightline, "They're filming our real life, so whatever we're doing is exactly what we'd be doing if the cameras weren't there. To me, it's not exploiting." (Fast forward to the next season of the show, and mom and daughter were friends again.)
Earlier this year, Lady Gaga took out her poison pen to post an ugly open letter to "Fashion Police" commentator Kelly Osbourne. The "Born This Way" singer wasn't exactly singing Kelly's praises when she wrote, "Your work on E! with the Fashion Police is rooted in criticism, judgment, and rating people's beauty against one another. Your show breeds negativity, and over the years has even become comedic in nature. It glorifies you and Joan Rivers pointing in the camera, laughing, and making jokes about artists and celebrities as if we are zoo animals."
Kelly's mom, Sharon Osbourne, came to her daughter's defense and drafted an open letter of her own. In a scathing Facebook post, "The View" co-host called Gaga "vile" and wrote: "I am calling you a bully because you have 32 million followers hanging on your every word and you are criticizing Kelly in your open letter. Are you so desperate that you needed to make this public? … By your actions to Kelly right now, you have shown me that you are nothing more than a publicity seeking hypocrite and an attention seeker."
Justin Timberlake's Open Letter to his Fans
"I'd rather speak directly to all of you," the singer wrote. "Back in June of last year, I quietly started working on what is now, my next journey with that thing I love called MUSIC … It is full of inspiration that I grew up listening to and some newfound muses that I've discovered along the way. I'm calling it 'The 20/20 Experience,' and it's coming out this year."
Timberlake finished with: "That's all I'm giving you for now."
Until the next open letter, that is!
