
Summer romance is alive and well in these top ten must-see summer romance flicks. Some of these summer romance movies are new, whereas some of them date back twenty years or more. Whatever the case, these romantic movies give us a taste of that romance that we all crave and desire, and watching the movie at least gives us hope that the romance can happen to us. Here are the top ten summer romance movies.
1. Dirty Dancing (1987). Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze show us that a vacation with your parents can actually turn into much, much more. For Jennifer Grey, this is her first love affair. Her character truly comes of age when she falls for the older Patrick Swayze's character. She is totally taken in by how he can dance, and the attitude he initially has with her. It's like he is a challenge. The great part about it is he eventually realizes that he has to grow up himself and stand up for himself against her father, who thinks that he is the one who got another girl at the resort pregnant. How romantic! A great choice for a summer romance flick.
2. Wild Orchid (1990). If you watched 9 1/2 Weeks, you know that Mickey Rourke can definitely deliver in the passion realm. He takes the screen again in this sensual movie that originally was rated X but deleted a few scenes in order to be broadcast for the American audience. In this romance flick, two ladies enter an affair with the same man. He eventually falls in love with one of them.
3. 9 1/2 Weeks (1986). Okay, Mickey Rourke, we'll give you another movie in the top ten for passionate summer romance. This movie goes a bit deeper, and features erotica and sadomasochism. However, it is very passionate so makes the romantic list. The romantic part of this is that underneath it all, Mickey Rourke's character does actually care for Kim Basinger's character. He just realizes the effect of his actions a little too late.
4. Henry and June (1990). If you're looking for an alternative summer romance, Henry and June is just the passionate flick. In Henry and June, a lady gets involved in a love triangle, where she has an affair with a married couple. First, she hooks up with the husband, and then the wife. All boundaries go out the window in this summer romance movie.
5. Letters to Juliet (2010). Letters to Juliet is a new release for 2010. It is about a girl who goes to Italy with her fiance' for a vacation. Her fiance' is so wrapped up in his business ordeals that he doesn't spend much time with her. So, she finds other pursuits. She gets involved with a place where Juliet from Romeo and Juliet lived, where people write letters to Juliet about their love affairs. A group of women then answer them. Sophie, the main character, finds an old letter from 50 years ago, and she and the women set out to answer the letter and then bring the two old lovers back together. This is quite a romantic film, set in Italy, one of the most romantic settings on earth!
6. When in Rome (2010). Another newer release, this romantic film is also set in Italy. The main character Beth, played by Kristen Bell, travels to Rome for her sister's wedding. She meets Josh Duhamel's character, Nicholas, and the two start to fall for each other. This movie then becomes quite the adventure film. Beth gets some coins out of a fountain, and then learns that the owner of the coins then falls in love with the person who took them. Many guys follow her back to New York after the wedding, including Nicholas. Beth has to find out whether Nick actually loves her, or it's just because she retrieved his coin out of the fountain.
7. Chocolat (2000). This romance flick stars Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp. A woman and her daughter move to a French town, and open a chocolate shop. The chocolate seems to have a mysterious effect on those who eat it. The woman gets involved with a traveling gypsy, and falls for him herself. Will their romance last?
8. Love Happens (2009). Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart star in this summer romance movie about a self help man who comes to Aniston's town. He helps everyone but himself. Aniston might just be the gal who can help him, as the two become involved in a romance.
9. The Ugly Truth (2009). Go ahead and male bash, Katherine Heigl. Apparently you just can't handle the truth about men and relationships, but Gerard Butler is about to change this for you. He has his own television show about the truth, and he ends up having to work with Heigl on her morning show. It's apparent that the sexual tension gets pretty high between the two of them, but will it ever see daylight? Will romance be the victor over Heigl's resistance? What about the romance Heigl had begun with the guy Butler had been giving her advice on, the doctor?
10. Mamma Mia (2009). You remember the song 'Mamma Mia' from Abba in the 70's? I do. It was the first vinyl 45 record that I ever owned. I sat and listened to it day in and out, and learned it by heart. Well, now a movie has been inspired by it. Meryl Streep is the mother, and she isn't sure who her daughter's father is. It could be one of three people. The daughter, Amanda Seyfried, determines that she will find out who her father is so he can give her away at her wedding. She invites all three men to the wedding, sure that she will be able to figure out which one is her father once they arrive.
