Tommy Chong: Whitney Houston Would Still Be Alive If She 'Stuck To Pot'

Tommy Chong - of "Cheech & Chong" fame - says Whitney Houston would still be alive today if she had used natural substances.

"Had she just stuck to pot, she'd be alive today," the actor-comedian told Access Hollywood on Tuesday night at "The Simpsons" 500th episode celebration.

"It's when you get into that other stuff... The trouble with that other stuff is that you forget you're high. You think you're taking a bath and you're not. You're under the water. It's a sad, sad thing," he continued.

Houston's cause of death is still unknown, but authorities confirmed on Monday that the late singer was submerged in a bathtub when she was first discovered on Saturday afternoon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

L.A. County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter told reporters that the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office was doing routine toxicology tests, the results of which will influence the determination of Houston's exact cause of death.

In September 2009, Houston spoke out about her past drug use in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

"We were lacing our marijuana with base... you put in your marijuana, you lace it, your roll it up and you smoke it," she said at the time.

"Your drug of choice was weed combined with cocaine?" Oprah asked.

"Cocaine, rock cocaine. Yes," the singer said, nodding her head.

According to Chong, Houston's death was a farewell.

"It's a sad, sad thing. In a way, though, it was like she was saying goodbye," he told Access. "Like she was passing the torch onto Adele. It was a tough one to let go. It was like she came by and said, 'OK, I'm out of here.' It's a sad, sad thing."

Anna Nicole, Heath Ledger, now Whitney Houston, all killed by "legal" prescription drugs, meanwhile, no one has ever died from smoking too much pot...

3digit is a liar. Pot has NEVER been shown to cause ANY type of cancer.

Wake up people, there has been and always will be more damage to ones health, family, life, due to legal drugs, than pot, but Too much of anything will not serve you well over time.

Moderation. Even pot will make you hack up blood if you are chronic.

When I first heard about Whitney's tragedy the first thing I thought of was drug overdose. Tommy Chong is not being disrespectul. He is simply stating what everyone is thinking. It is true if Whitney had stayed with some good kush like ak48, bubble gum, and lemon haze she would be alive today. There would be no need for pain pills like percocets and anxiety pills like xanax if marijuana was legal. Marijuana won't kill you if you mix alcohol with it.

The coroner told Whitney's family he believe that alcohol and a cocktail of prescription drugs killed Whitney. She was dead before she slid under water in tub because lungs were not full of water. The exact same thing regarding prescription drugs happened with Amy Winehouse and Heath Ledger.

Let me say this, the true dope dealers and pushers of toxic chemicals are doctors and pharmaceutical giants. Doctors prescribe dangerous drugs like xanax without hesitation. However, when the patient get addicted the doctors and the pharmaceutical companies are no where to be found. The doctors simply stop renewing the prescription and families are forced to help get intervention for patient. Pharmaceutical companies should be investigated along with the federal agency that regulate them. The drug cartels ain't got nothing on the pharmaceutical companies.

valium, xanax, lorazepam, are no cure for anything, not even anxiety. They should only be used in the very short term, panic, extreme bereavement, that kind of thing. But taken regularly? Absolutely not. the cure for psychological ills has to be spiritual not chemical.

Read Tommy Chong's book Tthe ICchong". he is an interesting peaceful guy who has been through a lot. I have to agree with him. Whitney started using the hard stuff and it killed her.

For all those "Gateway Drug" people out there, alcohol is the first drug a child uses not pot. So whats the real gateway drug?

Absolute truth ... the ONLY way pot can kill you is if you actually smoked your body weight in one hour (THAT'S WHY NO ONE HAS EVER OD'd)... and for me that would be 198lbs ... I can barely smoke a blunt in an hour ...

And sadly, more people die from Legal drugs than illegal ones.

Chong is right. There are, however, other issues that complicate this scenario. Sure, addicts have the personal responsibility of trying to get and stay clean, but they do not need doctors who feed them powerful prescription drugs. Those drugs are useful and beneficial when used appropriately. For example, how would you like to have a root canal and be offered no pain meds for the few days after the procedure?
The doctors that prescribe these meds and pharmacists that dispense in an ILLEGAL fashion are protected by other high income earning professional addicts, judges/attorneys, media and many law enforcement/ medical licensing agents. There is tons of money involved in this illegal problem. None of these people are ever held accountable for assisting addicts in ruining their lives and killing themselves. Don't believe me? Did ANY doctor (pharmacist or licensing authority) be made to account for the YEARS of illegal prescriptions given to Anna Nicole Smith or Michael Jackson??? How were they able to avoid being held responsible ? Support and assistance from dirty judges and media spin.
Dr. Conrad Murray is paying the price for his involvement with MJ (as he should), but there were other docs who were on board for YEARS , are still as high profile as ever AND are still practicing medicine. They suffered NOT ONE consequence to their illegal conrtibution to the deaths of these people, because they have friends/addicts in the right places. One of them, in fact, was just 'honored' with an article in a very prominent national publication. It's sickening.

I'm sorry but, the od stoner has a point. Though pot is an illegal substance, the lasting effect isn't as bad as crack-smoke crack and you die, smoke pot and....you get hungry. "are you gonna eat that snadwich?" Wow, how desperate must the news be to have to pull Tommy out of the basement? I love him but why Tommy? Kids-stay away from Crack!
