Tobey Maguire Settles Underground Poker Lawsuit

Tobey Maguire is off the hook.

The 36-year-old Spider-Man star settled a lawsuit last week over his winnings from a convicted con man during high-stakes Hollywood poker games, the Associated Press reports.

Maguire agreed to pay $80,000 to settle the lawsuit. He was paid over $311,000 by convicted Ponzi scheme operator Bradley Ruderman. (Ruderman is currently serving a 10-year prison sentenced after pleading guilty to wire fraud, investment adviser fraud and willful failure to file taxes.)

According to the Associated Press, if approved by a judge next month, Maguire will pay the money to a bankruptcy trustee who is trying to recoup money that Ruderman bilked from investors.

Maguire's settlement states he "strongly disputes that he violated any laws, rules or regulations in regard to participating in the poker games" but was agreeing to the payment to avoid fighting the case, which would be costly.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Affleck were also reportedly tied to the poker games but were not sued.

what kind of legal system is it when you can file a lawsuit and it is cheaper to pay than fight it.
the prick got into the poker game of his own free will. why should Toby be responsible for his losses?

Toby was the only one that won anything so the other actors did not suffer the same

So he has to pay back money to a crook, who wouldn't have paid it to Toby if the roles were reversed? Makes no sense.

What a screw job this is. The legal system provides a total lack of accountability on behalf of the guy running the ponzi scheme (10 years in California on white collar crime is about 2 years max) and those who invested in him and instead goes after a guy who won money from the thief in a poker game. This guy should be sentenced to prison labor @ $6 an hour and he can get out when he's paid off the damn money himself. This guy probably won money in poker games too in which case that money should be taken from his estate and given back to those who played with him. Why does it only work one way?

Since Toby had to pay his lawyer, perhaps from his winnings, shouldn't the trustee go after THAT money too? Where does this nonsense end? Good luck getting money BACK from a lawyer.
