Taylor Swift and Other Stars Who've Worn Suits to Award Shows

Taylor Swift normally wears pretty frocks, like this one, which was why it was surprise to see her in a suit.

If you think it's because they couldn't find the right gown, think again. Celeb super stars like Taylor Swift, Madonna and Beyonce know that the suit makes the woman. Wearing a suit to an awards show takes courage, and these celebs have more than their fair share. Whether it's going super short or carefully choosing a garment to set up a memorable reveal, these women all chose wisely.

Taylor Swift at the 2012 VMAs

Swift continues to send the message that she wears the pants in her life. She sings songs about ex-beaus and wants to be taken seriously. Perhaps her all white suit was a message to Kanye West that this year she meant business. In 2009, West snagged the microphone from the shocked swinger at the VMAs. Swift chose an all-white outfit, making her own rules about wearing white after Labor Day. She stood out with her crisp suit, red pout, and soft, straight hair.

Miley Cyrus, 2012 Billboard Music Awards

The young singer wore an all-white suit to the awards show, but without any visible pants or a skirt. She looked like she was just wearing a coat. Unlike Swift, who made sure her deep neckline revealed nothing, Cyrus showed some cleavage and a whole lot of leg. She paired the outfit with black and white striped shoes, bouffant hair and lots of rings. She looked more like a manipulative Sharon Stone than a classy Diane Keaton.

Diane Keaton, 61st Annual Golden Globe Awards on January 25, 2004

Next to Lauren Bacall, Diane Keaton is an actress we associate with the suit. With her tiny waist she can even pull off a belted suit coat look. Keaton also smartly chose an all-white outfit for the Golden Globes. She paired a long skirt with a formal, long suit coat with a turned up collar, reminiscent of "The Matrix." The outfit worked better behind the podium than on the red carpet.

    Madonna, VMAs, 2003

Madonna, no stranger to suits, started with a black tuxedo coat and pants, top hat, and commanding over-the-knee boots. By the end of her performance, she had lost the coat, and kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

    Britney Spears, VMAs, 2000

Another on-stage striptease act relied on a pin-striped black suit. Spears hit the stage wearing a suit and stripped down to a bedazzled, "nude" top and bottom.

    Beyonce, VMAs, 2011

Beyonce used a sparkling tuxedo coat to her advantage. She wore black pants and a simple button-down white shirt, leaving fans wondering if someone had raided Beyonce's gown closet that morning. She fooled us all because she unbuttoned her coat to reveal her baby bump, making VMA history.
