Taylor Swift could've but she didn't.

Defying expectations raised earlier in the week, the 19-year-old singer opted against using the bully pulpit of Saturday Night Live's opening monologue or any subsequent skits to hit back hard at Kanye West, who infamously interrupted her acceptance speech at September's MTV Video Music Awards.

Taylor Swift and Bill Hader confront Kanye-related expectations in new SNL clip

During her "Musical Monologue," in which she sang about all the things she was not going to talk about, she zinged former beau Joe Jonas and acknowledged the reports about her going out with Twilight's Taylor Lautner by winking and throwing a kiss.

Then, she got around to singing:

"You might be expecting me to say something bad about Kanye
"And how he ran up on the stage and ruined my VMA monologue
"But there's nothing more to say 'cause everything's OK
"I've got security lining the stage."

That cued Bill Hader and Jason Sudeikis to run up on stage, looking like Secret Service detail, holding up what looked like a police sketch of West.

"We have a great show," Swift concluded as the bit ended. "Kanye West is not here!"

Of course, maybe Swift decided to take what one might deem the high road. Or possibly the SNL writers figured, as many do, that the Kanye-as-"jackass" jokes (to use the word President Barack Obama did to describe his behavior) have been done to death in the last couple months.

Watch Swift's monologue below:

Taylor Swift is the type of role model young girls need as to how to handle controversy and I am proud of her for taking the high road. And by her actions since the VMA's she has shown to be a very classy and mature young lady. Kanye West has looked ridiculous without Taylor Swift having to say anything. Congrats to Taylor for being a high class, very respectful and decent young lady!

God Bless Taylor Swift. She exemplifies what is right and good with America in her taking the high road. Kanye is a moron, thug and nitwit. His music stinks and so does his lousy "me victim" attitude. Time for us to vote with our $$$ and take ignorants like Kanye off the stage permanently.

She's a cute kid, and I think just alluding to it satisfied those who wanted her to make an issue over it. I think she could've left it out, same with the remark about Joe Jonas (they're teenagers -- they fall in and out of love quickly), but over all, the sketch was fun.

I knew a special-ed kid in High School who totally reminds me of Kanye. He ran up on (the empty) stage in our crowded cafeteria and started saying "poop... huhuhuh FART ptttttt! huhuh bootie juice bootie juice bootie juice" until the assistant principal ran up and grabbed it from him, smiled/patted him on the back, and escorted him off stage...
