LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Sorry "Top Gun" fans, it appears Tom Cruise returning to the franchise has not been cleared for take off.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced suggesting Cruise was in line to reprise his role as Maverick in the fighter jet film, 22 years after the original.

However, Access Hollywood has confirmed those reports are false.

When contacted by Access, a spokesperson for Paramount (which released "Top Gun" in 1986) said there was "no way" Cruise would be returning to the role.

In addition, a rep for Cruise also told Access the reports of a Maverick reprisal are completely untrue.

According to the erroneous reports, the sequel would have seen Cruise's character returning to Top Gun school as a flight instructor.

Fans can catch Cruise on the big screen in a brief cameo in the upcoming comedy "Tropic Thunder," which hits theaters August 13.

His next starring role will come in the World War II drama "Valkyrie," slated for a February 2009 release.

I think that whatever makes a person successful they should do. I don't agree with everything actors or actress do in their personal lives. But seriously we should allow the their privacy and whatever beliefs disbeliefs they may have. Stop digging. Think of this way what if you were paid to entertain people and you the media in your face constantly. I honestly don't think people

They had already gotten rid of his 'booste-seat' from the first film. All Tom is is an ego-driven, GQ version of Vern Troyer. His last Scientology audit found him in the red! Go home, Tom,and be with Katie and prepare for the second coming of L. Ron Hubbard and give us a break. Really.

Top Gun doesn't need a sequel. Plus Tom Cruise thinks he is TOO good to anything like that if a sequel was a good idea.

Tom Cruise is not just an AMAZING actor he is an AMAZING person. If his beliefs molded him to the FAB person he is; more power to him. Its all about the PERSON. All I have read and recall about him and Nicole Kidman is how they would reach out to anyone in need. :)

Man, they are messing up. I'm not a scientologist and I personally disagree with everything they teach...but Top Gun would have been NOTHING without Tom Cruise. They could at least give him a cameo. They are being prejudice.

It always amazes me how some Americans can be so blatently rude when they comment on folks that are in the public arena. If you were watched/scrutinized 24/7, as some of these folks are, your demeanor would change a bit as well. Sit back and enjoy what you want, just know that your rude comments are not welcomed or acceptable in any manner. And some still wonder why were so hated in the world..
