T.R. Knight has officially left Grey's Anatomy, a source tells Usmagazine.com.

Months after Us exclusively reported that he and costar Katherine Heigl are exiting the hit ABC doc drama, the actor was released from his contract this week, a source tells Us. The source adds that show creator Shonda Rhimes had until June 30 to decide Knight's fate, but the actor ended up asking the network himself to be let go early.

"He's had enough of Shonda and ABC," says the source. "He decided to take back his power."

In the May season finale, Knight's character Dr. George O'Malley appeared to have died after he was struck by a bus. (The fate of Heigl's character Izzie also looked grim, as she lost consciousness following her cancer battle. It remains to be seen if she will return to the show in the fall.)

Both reps for Knight and ABC have no comment.

So what's next for Knight?

Entertainment Weekly -- which is also reporting news of Knight's departure -- says the actor is in talks to headline a 2010 Broadway revival of Lend Me a Tenor.

Not everyone in an ensemble cast can be the highlight. They all have to take a step back sometimes for someone else's storyline. I think he didn't like being a support character this past season. Katherine had a season like that last year and now this year it changed. I guess he just didn't want to wait his turn. Well, good luck to him anyway. Sad to see George go.

He wants to be on Broadway. He's had a weak story line for a long time now.

Hey Talk that......maybe he just doesn't want to do Grey's anymore. Not a bad example using Caruso but he was actually gone a lot longer than that and in my opinion he hasn't changed. Still comes off with the better than you attitude. Now T.R. I believe just needs a change. Good for him
