Son of actor Ryan O'Neal gets 16 months in prison

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A San Diego judge has sentenced the son of actor Ryan O'Neal to 16 months in prison for his involvement in a drug-fueled, head-on car crash last year that left another driver injured.

Griffin O'Neal had faced up to four years in state prison at his sentencing Friday.

O'Neal pleaded guilty to two felony charges of driving under the influence and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was on probation for a 2007 when the crash occurred in August. Prosecutors say he tested positive for several drugs at the time.

O'Neal missed his sentencing hearing last month. His lawyer Heather Boxeth has said O'Neal relapsed by drinking alcohol after five years of sobriety and was in rehab.

After watching Ryan & Tatum: the O'Neals on OWN, you clearly see that Ryan is the root of their problems. He is the WORST father a person could have and the saddest part is that he won't take responsibility for his mistakes. Every single one of his kids are psychologically and emotionally damaged.

Bull!!! This guy is 47 - read that again - 47 years old!!!!! QUIT blaming parents for what adult children do. It is HIS responsibility for what he does in HIS LIFE at HIS AGE!!!
Anything that "screwed him up" can be changed once you are an adult and have control of your life. It's YOUR responsibility by the time you are 47, to be sure.

no, Dave. Lori is exactly right.

No Dave. Lori and Barb are correct. How is he supposed to know what being a responsible adult is if he was never influenced by one? Daddy O'Neal was a playboy and actor first and foremost. His kids were probably never wanted in the first place. He is an emotionless man...exception?...Farrah.

Some people have mixed up Farrah's son Redmond who was in jail when his mother died with Ryan's eldest son Griffin. It is sad that all of Ryan's children have substance abuse issues and other mental issues because of his inability to be a positive healthy parent. I doubt Ryan will ever accept responsibility for what happen to his children. His children clearly were not the love of his life and that is sad. Never should have been a parent.

Why do these celeb kids always get less punishment than they deserve or that the rest of us would get? It's not helping them....

So that people will think criminal justice is too soft, and push for even stiffer laws and even more harsh sentences.

I don`t think he`s being treated any different. 16 months is a long time to sit in a cage.
      • jaded 3 months ago
The presumptive sentence in the state of oregon would have been sixteen to eighteen months in prison. It would appear that he was treated no differently than anyone else.

the actors son got off real easy. he should have be given 10 years'
easy. he's had 3 DUI's, and one conviction for shooting his gun into an
empty car that belonged to his former girl friend. he killed another friend
in '88 while he was drunk and driving a boat in Maryland. he got off easy
on that charge, too. when will the judges get the stupid stars' out of their eyes?

He is already on probation. then drank alcohol & missed court 'cause he's in rehab. AND he only gets 16 months in jail!
-- just wondering - maybe should have been a stiffer sentence With rehab.

Seems Francis Ford Coppola should have something to say about this. After all this is the same thing that happened decades ago.O'Neal was the cause of His Son being killed due to driving crazy in a boat,if I remember correctly.Hollywood lawyering up and w/his young age,he was given a slap on the wrist. It seems it didn't faze him that his using causes him to place others in harms way-Tatum seems healthier. At least She uses therapy and it was good for her to try and reach out to the shell of a Father-For HER sake.Just a sad family story of too much of all the wrong things...

DUI, on probation, convicted felon/gun - 16 months????
    • Coondog  •  3 months ago
He should have gotten the four years AT LEAST. He'll be out in less than a year and probably end up killing someone and the judge can take partial blame. Weak punk.

This kid needs some serious mental and physical help. He seems to be trying real hard to get himself killed. I feel badly for him that he continues to make such terrible choices.

Come on now, it's time to stop screwing around and decide what you want to do in life. Isn't this getting a little tedious for you?

If you're just a regular Jo you'll rot in jail but if you're an O'Neal only 16 months. Go figure. Therefore if you're thinking of a crime make sure you're a celebrity first.
