"Glee's" latest cast addition is not only bad to the bone, but a heartthrob to boot. Besides his dashing good looks, the villainous Sebastian Smythe (played by Grant Gustin) is a well-traveled, athletic singer with the rival Dalton Academy Warblers. Also, as Kurt (Chris Colfer) very accurately describes it, he has a head of perfectly coifed, "obnoxious, CW hair." Most vile of all, Sebastian doesn't mind making ruthless plays for other guys' boyfriends.
Seeing Red
Sebastian's unapologetic and merciless pursuit of Blaine (Darren Chris), in spite if Blaine's obvious commitment to Kurt, proves he is willing to stop at nothing to get what he wants. This includes a certain slurpee throwing incident that has the members of New Directions seeing red. The Dalton Academy crooner is a bad guy with a capital "B" and Gleeks wouldn't want it any other way. Every great story requires a great villain and, if that's the case, Season 3 of "Glee" is turning out to be epic.
Comeback Kings
Besides Sebastian's self-assured, malevolent demeanor, he also delivers some quite audacious, and incidentally hilarious, dialogue. In his face-off with Kurt, Sebastian hits with the ultimate mean-spirited comeback when he says, "Blaine's too good for you. New Directions is a joke. And one of us has a hard-luck case of the gayface, and it ain't me." To his credit, Kurt lets Sebastian know, "You smell like Craigslist."
Sebastian is certainly adding some spice to the bland, squeaky clean relationship between Kurt and Blaine. The couple's soul-mate status is being put to the Sebastian test, which will either help bring them closer or tear them apart. Of course, Sebastian's priorities also come into question as he has to decide whether his Warbler duties or his relationship meddling will ultimately come first. In the end, Sebastian may have a change of heart as well in tonight's "King of Pop" episode.
The Man Behind the CW Hair
As much as Gleeks love to hate Sebastian, the 22-year-old actor, and Virginia native, who plays him is a fresh-face newcomer and nothing like his character. Gustin went from pursuing a musical theater degree to being on the national tour of "West Side Story" before being picked to play Sebastian on "Glee." Coincidentally, the episode he made his debut on featured "West Side Story" as the school musical which was being directed by Artie (Kevin McHale).
