Moe, Larry and Curly are about to meet their match!

Sean Penn has signed on to star in the upcoming film, The Three Stooges, playing Larry. Jim Carrey is in negotiations to play Curly and Benicio del Toro is possibly being considered to play the trio's slap-stick leader, Moe, Hollywood Reporter reports.

The film -- which will not be a biopic but a fictional treatment that will be updated for modern audiences -- has been an ongoing project of the Farrelly brothers and MGM for years.

Peter and Bobby Farrelly -- who have been behind such films as Dumb & Dumber, There's Something About Mary and The Heartbreak Kid -- wrote the original script, which was at one point structured similarly to the Stooges' classic short films by featuring a story that would've spanned over three installments of roughly 30 minutes each. They have since streamlined it into a single narrative.

Take a look at stars getting in character while on set.

"When the economy started turning, we felt like the world could use a Stooges slapfest," Peter said last year. "Bobby and I havent done a real physical comedy in a while, and its the most exciting thing we could think of now, to have people go to the movie, see some great slapstick fun family humor."

MGM plans to start production in the fall for a 2010 release slot.

  • Dean B, no he does not have to gain weight and you need to go back and read it again! It's not gonna be exactly like "the 3 stooges" who is fat on tv but it's gonna be totally different. So, the new movie "3stooges" is going to be very different than you watching those old black&white on tv, but we are watching COLOR! duh...

Having been a Stooges fan since the days of NY Channel 11 in the 60s, I'm looking forward to it, but I have doubts too. As hysterical as Jim Carrey is, I'd say he bears a better likeness to Shemp. Why not get Seth Rogen away from Li-Lo, and hit him in the head with a mallet.

This is the worst idea ever conceived by anyone. The ABC biopic was brilliantly done, but this will be a complete travesty. No one can replace the original Stooges, and these days I wouldn't trust the Farrelly Brothers to write a 4 page short story, much less a 90 minute Stooges skit. Jim Carrey playing Curly? Crystal Clear Pepsi made more sense.
