Dallas Stars' Sean Avery was handed a six-game suspension Friday by the National Hockey League for calling his ex-girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert, "sloppy seconds" earlier this week.

The hockey forward also agreed to seek professional anger management evaluation and, if necessary, structured counseling in light of his pattern of behavior, according to the Dallas Stars website.

"Mr. Avery has expressed remorse for his recent comments and has sought a professional anger management evaluation," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "I will require that he follow through with that process as a condition of his returning to the ice and that he complies with any and all recommendations."

On Thursday, the one-time Vogue intern apologized for slamming Cuthbert.

"I would like to sincerely apologize for my off-color remarks to the press yesterday from Calgary," he said in a statement obtained by SportingNews.com.

Avery has already served two games of the suspension -- one of which was in Calgary -- and will not be eligible to play for the Stars until Dec. 16, when his team plays the Phoenix Coyotes in Dallas.

The hockey star started the controversy Tuesday in Calgary after a practice when talking to reporters about Calgary Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf, Cuthbert's current beau.

"I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada," Avery said. "I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about. Enjoy the game tonight."

Calling the ex a "pass-around Patty" is part of the whole divorce game. Not that the NHL knows anything. Hell, hockey isn't even a sport!
