NEW YORK, New York -- Kanye West created a stir at Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards by stealing Taylor Swift's awards thunder, but a few stars who've survived some scandals of their own have chimed in on his behalf.

Russell Brand, the show's host, who infamously introduced his drug dealer to Kylie Minogue during his days working at MTV UK, and last year quit the BBC's Radio 2 after he was suspended for calling an elderly actor and claiming on the man's answering machine that he bedded the star's granddaughter, was one of the stars who came to Kanye's defense.

"Calm down, no one died, it's all right," Russell told Ryan Seacrest during the "On Air With Ryan Seacrest" radio show on Monday. "In the past, I've made mistakes and done things a little bit daft, if I think someone has done things that I don't agree with, I think, well, I've done things in the past that I'm not proud of. I know Kanye, and I know he's a nice bloke. We all make mistakes in life."

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, after winning Best Female Video, Kanye took the microphone from 19-year-old Taylor's hand during her acceptance speech and said Beyonce, who was also nominated in the category, made "one of the best videos of all time."

While Russell defended Kanye, the British ladies man said it was wrong for the rapper to reportedly leave the country singer in tears.

While Russell defended Kanye, the British ladies man said it was wrong to reduce her to tears.

"Taylor Swift's a young kid, isn't she? Yeah, you can't make a pretty girl cry," Russell added.

But Russell wasn't the only star to defend Kanye. Kirstie Alley, who once struggled with drug addiction, and has been criticized in the press over her weight, also offered some support for the superstar rapper.

"OF COURSE he overstepped the line...but I don't believe anything is irreparable...people need to be allowed to make amends. HUGE AMENDS," Kirstie wrote on her Twitter page on Monday.

By the way I am a Native American and I do not hate white people for what their ancestors did hundreds of years ago. Yes those white people were wrong, but they were different times and different people. Can't we all just live in peace and judge people for their inside and not their outside? Peace!!!
