NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. -- With domestic abuse propelled into the mainstream after Chris Brown 's alleged assault against Rihanna , Rosie O'Donnell reacts to the message it sends not only to her own children, but to young women who might be in a similar situation.

Access Hollywood caught up with Rosie at Jane Fonda 's return to the stage in "33 Variations" on Broadway at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in New York, where the always-outspoken former talk show host sounded off.

"My son said, 'Oh boy, I wonder what she did to make him mad,'" Rosie told Access. "That's the time to start re-educating there."

And it's not just her own children that Rosie is concerned with.

"So, especially young women, the time to leave someone who hits you, is after the first time... that's it." Rosie continued. "Because the chances of them turning around and changing are minimal."

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Brown allegedly assaulted Rihanna during the early hours of February 8, biting and hitting her before leaving the scene.

Brown turned himself in and was arrested several hours later by the LAPD on charges of making criminal threats. He was released on $50,000 bail.

A week after the incident, Brown released a statement to Access.

"Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired," he said in his statement. "I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God's help, to emerging a better person."

Last week, a judge approved a request by Brown's attorney to delay the R&B star's arraignment in Los Angeles Superior Court on two felony charges for an alleged incident involving Rihanna .

A large portion of our society is still sick and needs help. It's just like back in 94' where people along the freeway and streets we're cheering on OJ Simpson during a police chase. That's back when Rwanda genocide took place and millions of innocent civilians we're slaughtered. The same thing is happening right now in the Congo where many thousands of wome

Obviously he couldn't have done that to her face while driving...he pulled the car over, because there's proof she was bitten...If he was able to pull the car to a stop...he could have gotten out and called the police if she initially attacked him. Chris Brown has no marks and Rihanna's face was battered up. Stop making excuses for Chris Brown because you have some bias att

There should be a law with a restraining order after someone is violently abused. Self-defense is an only reason to be violent to stop an attacker ~ There has been trillions of violent bloodshed in earth's history. Who can debate with Einstein's intelligence in his quote that "Anger and initial violence is only of the ignorant." WHEN WILL WE ALL SPIRITUALLY GROW

first of all rihanna was the first to attack, i'm tired of people saying oh he this he is that maybe he went a a bit far but he does have the right to defend himself and it 2009 women are much faster to throw punches then 20 plus years ago so stop with she need to be a role model crap because hitting your boyfriend because your mad is not a good role model.
