Robin Williams Recovering After Open-Heart Surgery

Robin Williams is resting comfortably after having heart surgery Friday to replace his aortic valve, his rep tells Usmagazine.com.

"Mr. Williams' operation went extremely well, and we expect him to make a full recovery," said A. Marc Gillinov, M.D., a staff cardiothoracic surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic, where the actor, 57, was treated. "The 3-1/2-hour heart surgery was conducted to replace his aortic valve, repair his mitral valve and correct his irregular heart beat."

Added Dr. Gillinov, "His heart is strong, and he will have normal heart function in the coming weeks with no limitations on what he'll be able to do."

In true Williams style, "a couple of hours after surgery, he was entertaining the medical team and making us all laugh," Dr. Gillinov said.

Earlier this month, Williams was admitted to a Miami hospital after experiencing a shortness of breath.

"The professionals at the University of Miami Hospital and ultimately at the Cleveland Clinic were all fantastic," Williams told Us in a statement. "I can't thank them enough for their kindness and dedication while I was in their care. I must also thank all the people who have expressed their love and concern for me. I have been deeply touched by their support."

Williams then joked, "I got some great new material for the tour and can't wait to get back on the road. I'm thinking the next leg of the tour will be 'Weapons of Self-Destruction and Reconstruction!'"

Williams, who postponed his one-man comedy show, "Weapons of Self-Destruction," will resume touring in the fall.
