Robert Pattinson is making the talk show rounds to promote his new film "Cosmopolis." Of course, all fans want to know is how Rob is coping with Kristen Stewart's affair. Until now, he has largely avoided the public by laying low at Reese Witherspoon's Ojai estate. The actor's current talk show and red carpet appearances reveal a good-natured bloke trying to make the best of the cards he was dealt.
Rob's "Cosmopolis" character, Eric Packer, is much darker than Edward Cullen, his "Twilight" vamp with a heart of gold. In the psychological thriller, the 26-year-old plays a 28-year-old billionaire living in a bubble in New York City and much of the movie takes place in his stretch limo. As for his personal life, Pattinson revealed on "Good Morning America" that he probably still wouldn't be speaking out if it wasn't for this project. He explained, "The reason you go on to TV is to promote movies. That's the only way to do it."
Rob on "The Daily Show"
Leave it to "The Daily Show" funnyman Jon Stewart to break the ice after another Stewart broke Rob's heart. The tension was palpable as Pattinson sat down for his first post-personal drama televised interview.
"What have you been up to?" Jon quipped, throwing Rob immediately off his game. "I had a joke prepared. G-d damn it! I was all set up and ready to go," Robert replied. The conversation was light, fun and easygoing.
Jon presented two containers of Ben & Jerry's ice cream with the words, "Okay, let's just do this." The host then put Rob at ease as he added, "Now, we are just a couple of gals talking. All right; tell me everything." Stewart also joked, "Boy, you are better off. Kick her to the curb."
The good-natured Rob played along explaining, "I'm trying to avoid eating this. I'm going to split my Spanx." When Stewart asked what the heartthrob really wanted fans to know, R-Patz replied, "I genuinely want to make 'Cosmopolis' have a bigger opening weekend than 'The Dark Knight.'"
Rob on "GMA"
Rob's conversation with George Stephanopoulos on "Good Morning America" was more measured. Instead of ice cream, George presented Rob with a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch breakfast cereal. Stephanopoulos then insisted that they "address the elephant in the room."
Rob mumbled and smiled through a barrage of inquiries about his personal status and state of mind. Pattinson evaded the tough questions by obsessing about the cereal, telling the host, "It's only 30 calories a bowl." He also added, "Pretty much everything that comes out of my mouth is irrelevant." It was an awkward way to deal with an already awkward situation.
Before discussing his film, Rob had a moment of decisive clarity. Pattinson told Steph, "I've never been interested in trying to sell my personal life and that's really the only reason people bring it up."
Rob on "Showbiz Tonight"
For HLN's "Showbiz Tonight" conversation, Rob was joined by his "Cosmopolis" director, David Cronenberg. The interview focused more on the film but still had to address the big story. The host took a gentle, sisterly approach asking, "You really are okay?" She also addressed rumors that Pattinson was drinking and "wallowing in misery."
Robert spoke candidly explaining, "You start having a total disassociation." The actor also understands that the fame game is his world now. He confessed, "Since the first 'Twilight' you enter this kind of realm where you get stuff reported about you and it's weird." The full HLN interview will air next Tuesday.
So, what do you think about R-Patz continuing to take the high road?
