In return to air, Colbert honors ailing mother

NEW YORK (AP) — With a nod of tribute to his ailing mother, Stephen Colbert returned to the air Monday.

Colbert was back hosting "The Colbert Report," which last week mysteriously canceled the tapings of two episodes. Colbert's 91-year-old mother, Lorna Colbert, is ill. And while the comedian didn't address her by name, he offered a "confidential" message to "a lovely lady."

Said Colbert: "Evidently, having 11 children makes you tough as nails."

Colbert is the youngest of 11 children. His father, James Colbert, and two of his brothers were killed in an airplane crash in 1974.

He also comically addressed the rumors stoked by the brief absence of what he called "the hub around which the republic turns."

@Bite me: I hope somebody or something does bite you, preferably in the same way as Robert DeNiro did in 'Cape Fear'.

91 years old! I don't watch tv, and didn't know he was absent or she was ill. God bless and grant her many more years!

While I do not watch his shows...alittle too much over the top for my taste, I applaud this man for doing what he did. He went "Family First"..and walked off his show to be with his mom. Kuddos Mr.Colbert ..and even more for not trying t make it a gag line..by pulling her name into the show. It sounded like you did a very classic way! I wish your mother good health!

Tom just hasn't graduated yet. He'll learn as he grows UP, what the 'real deal' is.

You got a strange sense of humor if you think he's funny.................

Republicans are humorless unless they are laughing at the poor or a racial sterotype. Seen any good conservative comics lately?...ever?

It is a shame it took a comedian to place the lunacy of the superpacs front and center. How many other "news shows" took you step by step through the creation of a real super pac?

Not a true political figure, or even a real news host, yet still has considerally more balls than any real politician/news host.

      Kuddos Colbert

This man has his priorities right... And I will agree, women who have endured the Depression, WWII and many raised children should be honored by us all.

Welcome back. I have missed the Report. He does skewer people, much like many other radio and television personalties, but he does it with humour and good grace.
