Katherine Heigl's newly adopted daughter Naleigh is lucky to be alive.

According to reports, the 10-month-old child of the Grey's Anatomy star, 30, and husband Josh Kelley was born with a hole in her heart -- which may be why the baby was classified as "special needs" last week.

The baby underwent life-saving surgery to correct the birth defect when she was only two months old.

The couple was reportedly able to speed up the adoption process -- which included completing an exhaustive, 40-page questionnaire that grilled them on everything from personal backgrounds to parenting philosophies -- because officials wanted to find a family for Naleigh, from South Korea, as quickly as possible.

"Katie and Josh were aware it could take years, so they were being patient," a source told Usmagazine.com.

Of their willingness to care for a special-needs baby, the insider said, "they are thrilled to have a child in their lives, no matter what the challenges."

There are so many kids here that need families but the red tape and all the cash that changes hands makes it nearly impossible to get a baby.I have seen children waiting for years here because selfish parents will not give up their rights. They would rather see them rot in the system then get loving full time parents. We need change here in the US to make it easier for children to get a family.

I agree there are enormous needs here at home, but I have a nephew and two nieces who were adopted from other countries because my sister-in-law was too "old," or my brother-in-law already had children, or their jobs required them to travel occasionally, and other incre
