In refocusing clothing line, Olsens shun spotlight

NEW YORK (AP) — Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen seem like they are committed to make their fashion collection The Row a player in the industry. To do that, they have taken a step back.

The design duo staged a handful of intimate, abbreviated runway shows at The Carlyle Hotel on Madison Avenue on Monday as part of New York Fashion Week. The clothes — full of quiet elegance and impressive craftsmanship — did all the talking. The only sound in the room came from a baby grand piano. Photographers weren't even allowed into the show, with the brand deciding to provide news outlets with their own images.

The strategy of shunning the spotlight could backfire if the Olsens didn't continue to turn out impressive clothes that draw the support of top fashion editors and retailers.

They've developed a distinct point of view that embraces fluidity and sophistication, usually with monochromatic outfits in tempting fabrics. Embellishment is minimal, but the looks they presented for fall ramped up the uptown luxury factor with mink and alligator trims, and quite a bit of dressy taffeta.

The Olsens explained in their notes that they were courting the American woman "from day to night." Think cozy chenille jackets or cashmere tops with an underlayer of sheer chiffon, or paired with a full-length skirt. They also put together blouses with billowy sleeves and slim bottoms.

"Slightly irreverent, she plays with duality of season and time of day. She wears summer clothing in winter and daywear in the evening. The result is a relaxed and timeless elegance," they said.

Yikes, these are their clothes? I am not sure, seeing how they usually look, why anyone would think of them as role models for fashion. That white dress is ghastly and how much do they want to limit their buying public by "creating" the black ensemble?

Shunning the spotlight is fine, but they need to stop shunning SUNlight.

I know it's way too expensive for me, but I admire the fact that the Olsens made a commitment to have the clothes made in America.

They cannot dress themselves why would anyone think they could dress someone else? They need to go back to school if this is their future.

This "future" you talk about has made them tens of millions of dollars. Jealous much?

Wow, these two are creepy. I don't know what happened to them, but it is scary. Has there been a successful transition from child star to well adjusted adult? I have only seen a few that appear that way.

Drew Barrymore did a stint in rehab at age 12!!, Liz Taylor battled alcoholism her entire life. But I see your point, there are some success stories. There is quite a few that lost their way and have yet to find it.

Who designs for the Olsens? I am curious as to how many prototypes their designers go through before the Olsens are satisfied.

They dress like Bag Ladies, what would inspire anyone to attend their fashion week? I hear they have a high-end line of clothes, I don't think I"ve ever seen anything of the Olson's that I wanted to wear? But I wish them well......

I like the Olsens in general and the clothes do look very well made, but if you ask me these outfits are one big Snooze fest (with the exception of the first black #. Only one that stood out to me) The neck lines are very high and most of the tops remind me of what a potato sack would look/fit like if it had head and arm holes. Only super models and the Olsens (and anyone as skinny) could pull looks like these off without looking preggers, or just dumpy. But that's "fashion" for you...whomp whomp.

Nothing says "I am and idiot" quite like being into fashion.
      • Rod Hardmann 3 months ago
And nothing says "I am a BIGGER idiot" than misspelling a two-letter word in a post calling people idiots. "I am AND idiot"?!?!?!?!?

        AHHHH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHaaaaaaaaaa.......

The Olsen twins give off this Greta Garbo vibe of "I vant to be alone" .....all the while trying to be up front and center of every camera of any fashion event ............very confusing .....

Okay. Now I realize why actresses dress the way they do on the red carpet even when their outfits look outrageously awful, totally inappropriate for the occasion and very unflattering. They are choosing their outfits based on having seen them on the runway at fashion shows. Fashion shows are presented to show a designer's line of clothing and to sell the clothing. It's up to the consumer to choose the outfits that are the best for them. The see-through outfit over the black underwear is a copy of the outfit modeled by the Duchess of Cambridge in her university days and is not an original design.
