Probe into Beyonce baby complaints at NY hospital

NEW YORK (AP) — State health officials are investigating complaints patients in a hospital neonatal unit were mistreated while Beyonce was there giving birth to her and Jay-Z's daughter.

They had received two complaints about Manhattan's Lenox Hill Hospital, health department spokesman Michael Moran said Wednesday. One was made anonymously, and the other was from someone who had learned about the matter through the media, he said. Officials would be looking into whether any regulations were violated, he said.

The hospital said it would fully cooperate with the inquiry, and it announced Wednesday it was conducting its own probe into the complaints about the treatment of neonatal unit patients.

Beyonce gave birth to the couple's baby, Blue Ivy Carter, at the hospital on Saturday.

Media reports said Beyonce and Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, paid $1 million to take over a floor and their security guard blocked parents from the neonatal unit for hours. The hospital denied the reports, saying the couple paid the standard rate for an executive suite without disclosing what that is.

One new mother, Rozz Nash-Coulon, told The Associated Press that her twins, born Dec. 28, were in the neonatal unit and, starting Friday, intense security measures made it a struggle to see them as guards directed hallway traffic.

"Once they checked in there was high security everywhere," she said Monday. "It looked like the president was on our floor. The hospital's security cameras were taped over. Internal windows from the hallways into the ward were blacked out."

The hospital's executive director was heading up its own inquiry into the complaints, hospital spokeswoman Barbara Osborn said. The hospital was interviewing parents who had children in the newborn wing when Jay-Z and Beyonce were there, she said.

"We have spoken to seven out of the 10," she said. "None have reported being stopped from seeing their babies."

She confirmed that security cameras were briefly taped over when the Carter family was being moved, "but only when a security guard was present" on the fourth floor, where the neonatal unit is located. She declined to say why they were taped over.

She said that other parents at the unit did notice "enhanced security." But she said none felt restricted from accessing the unit or any other at the hospital.

Jay-Z confirmed the birth of the couple's daughter in a song released on his social website Life and Times on Monday.

Lenox Hill Hospital is a popular choice for the rich and famous — from late philanthropist Brooke Astor to "30 Rock" star Tina Fey.

If other new parents were barred from seeing their newborns, then that is disgusting and outrageous.

I'm so sick of these pompous privileged celebrities who think they're better than everybody else!

I agree, but what is really a shame, is that they have so little privacy that they feel the need to have extra security so paparazzi do not take photos of theit child without their consent. I feel sympathy for the parents at the hospital but also the celebrity parents who have the extra worry of someone kidnapping the newborn. its a sick world.

If they were that concerned about privacy, they should have stayed home and set it all up there.

One thing with people is that they just talk allll over their face without worry or care for others, anyone else with their status would have done the same very thing!!!!

My twins were in the NICU for 3 weeks. People don't realize you are already limited to when you can visit your babies in the NICU. It's hard enough not being able to see them and to hold them when you want to...so when this couple was turned away, they took away precious time, This is horrible. This brings back so many painful memories.

Thank you! This is what makes me disturbed as well. My son was in a special care unit and seeing him every three hours to nurse was all I looked forward to. I can not imagine not being able to do that just because a celebrity is having a c-section. Disgusting if this is true!

I'm also a NICU mommy and this disgusts me. We understand when babies need surgery or are having an emergency and we can't go in (it's hard, but we get it because we've almost all been there...my own son's surgery at 3 days old shut out his pod's other parents for 20 minutes); but to deny these parents access simply because someone famous is there and wants privacy is ridiculous. Shame on them and shame on the hospital for allowing it. I could've cared less if the Pope himself came waltzing in while I was visiting my son; all eyes are on your baby who is fighting for their life.

My daughter was in NICU for 3 months, and I saw several babies die during that period. These two celebs are #$%$ lucky that a baby didn't die during their little excursion. Imagine if a parent lost a child during that time and had been barred from the room.

What makes Beyonce so special anyway???? Other people should not have to suffer or be inconvenienced because of her.
      • LadyBe 4 months ago
They did not suffer, but got their fifteen minutes of fame by complaining.

MONEY... makes her special. Apparently it also makes it okay for you to be incredibly ego centric. both her and her husband are disgusting human beings.

Jayonce should have did a home birth, excuse me, mansion birth & hired the best doctors & nurses they could buy & let the regular people have their moment of joy. Heaven forbid my kids be born in the same hospital with the super rich, if they take away my right to see my children when i want to, they will more than security to fend me off

stopping one family member from seeing a baby is horrible... we the public, need to stop making these people into untouchable gods... she can have her baby like the rest of us women, why does her labor have anything over any other woman's? Horrible horrible

Any time you cover up security cameras in a neonatal/pediatric floor you are committing a crime. The cameras are there to ensure no one can steal a baby. The hospital and Beoynce/Jay Z should be fined for covering the cameras, and sued or forced to pay fines to the parents they kept from seeing their ill children. Just because you can sing or have money doesn't give you the right to make a hospital an unsafe place. If I were a parent and their security guard prohibited me from seeing my sick child, I'd have called the cops and the hospital administration, then snapped his picture with my phone and released it to the media. These people are disgusting.

The security cameras on the delivery level were covered up, for thier privacy! YES, I would say a security breach was violated!

You can't take back what was already printed in the newspaper and witnessed. Under orders from the selfish couple; All employees had to turn over thier phones, security cams were turned off and doors were blocked. Taking back what is in print is like putting bullets back in a gun.

they should pay some kind of restitution to those new parents that were inconvenienced by their total disregard for anyone but themselves. i doubt if they care, they have that "me mentality"

What's worse is that I've heard it was the picu unit. We're talking babies that could die at any moment.

these 2 dirt bags and the hospital should be sued by everyone who had to deal with their crap in the hospital. they may have money but they are nothing.

Spoiled little rich kids--but how many of you and your children have contributed to this couple's delusion of being special and better than "ordinary" people? Don't go to the performances; don't buy the CD's; don't buy the perfume and other products they peddle; don't buy the books and magazines that feature them---just read articles you select on the Internet where the price is small and if you really resent them don't even do that.

About time us regular people stood up and let these soon to be gone people know they can't shove everyone around just for their own wants. When are people going to understand if you keep buying their junks and going crazy over every little thing they do YOU are making them wealthier. Do you think they will help you with your rent? Try asking.
