Alfre Woodard has been tapped to play Sam's mom on Private Practice, Entertainment Weekly reports.
The actress will guest-star in an episode slated to air this November. Maybe Sam (Taye Diggs) will have some happy engagement news to share?

Hopefully, Sam's mom is a little more stable than Woodard's last turn as a matriarch. The Desperate Housewives alum recently portrayed Lafayette's mom Ruby Jean on True Blood. She will also star in the upcoming Lifetime remake of Steel Magnolias alongside Queen Latifah and Phylicia Rashad.
Private Practice premieres Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 10/9c on ABC.
