Secrets have a way of coming out and that's just what happened when the "Liars" attended Rosewood High School's "Truth-Up Day." Spencer finds out she has an older brother; Hanna is on to her evil stepsister Kate; Aria sees something disturbing; and Emily has a surprising ally in Mona.
Hanna (Ashley Benson):
Hanna, Ashley (Laura Leighton), Kate, and Isabel are called in to the office to meet with the school's principal. Isabel wants Hanna punished for sending out the picture message showing her daughter in all her glory. Ashley naturally defends Hanna. Instead of punishing Hanna with suspension, the principal wants all of them to volunteer for the "Truth-Up Day"
In the hall, everyone stares at Hanna while Kate plays the victim for all it's worth.
At home, Ashley talks to Hanna and tells her this is twice she has said she was framed. Of course, Hanna can't tell her mother about "A" and as Ashley reaches the bedroom door, a tearful Hanna tells her mother that she didn't send the picture.
Hanna and Caleb end up sitting on the school's roof. Hanna tells her boyfriend she wants to go to California. She then says she thinks someone is on the roof with them, but Caleb reassures her that no one ever goes up there. The roof was Caleb's "home" for a time.
Later, Hanna meets up with Aria, Spencer, and Emily. She sees Kate taking off one of her shirts and notices Kate has a birthmark. This is important because in the picture of Kate there isn't a birthmark and Hanna realizes the photo had been doctored in Photoshop.
Hanna and her sinister stepsister end up in the bathroom where Hanna confronts her. Kate denies it was she who sent the picture. Hanna pushes and Kate finally snaps. Unaware that Aria and Emily are hiding in the bathroom stalls recording the exchange, Kate admits to the dastardly deed. Hanna can't wait for her mother to hear the confession that vindicates her.
Aria (Lucy Hale):
Alison's claim ticket was for a raincoat. Aria rifles through the pockets and finds a phone number. Aria wants to call the number but Emily has reservations. Emily finally calls and is taken to voice mail. Aria leaves a message.
At school, Aria comes across Holden who is making a banner for "Truth-Up Day." As he prepares to leave to find tacks, someone knocks over his backpack. Aria sees a bag full of pills. This makes for some awkwardness because Aria appears to be avoiding her partner in sneakiness. She finally tells Holden she can't handle it if he's hurting himself and walks away.
Aria receives a text message from "A": Truth hurts sweetie. May hurt your new pal even more. - A
Someone is in one of the classrooms with an ultra violet light. One of the truth messages someone wrote simply said, "I know who killed Alison DiLaurentis." It appears that Jenna (Tammin Sursok) and Noel (Brant Daugherty) were the ones looking through these messages and Aria walks in on them.
Aria goes to the roof to look for Caleb but doesn't find him. She tries to leave but someone has locked the door. She bangs on the door hoping someone will hear her. Someone is on the roof with her and when she tries to climb a ladder, Noel grabs hold of her leg and wants to know where Caleb is. Holden comes out of nowhere and does an impressive leg sweep that causes Noel to go down in pain. Aria and Holden make a beeline for the door and make their escape.
Emily (Shay Mitchell):
Rosewood High School's principal apparently has it in for Emily and Mona (Janel Parrish) overhear the exchange. The two talk and Emily apologizes for not standing up for Mona when Alison was being so mean to the girl.
Later in the evening, Emily is called to the office. When she arrives, she finds Mona looking for evidence that would help Em get back on the swim team.
Emily sees Mona talking to the principal in the office. Mona finds Em and informs her she's back on the swim team! Who knew Mona had the ability to blackmail?
Spencer (Troian Bellisario):
The most explosive secret of the night came when Spencer started putting two and two together.
In a flashback, she and Alison were in Spencer's room. Peter and Veronica Hastings could be heard arguing downstairs about Melissa and Jason (Drew Van Acker) dating. If only the two would-be love birds knew the truth back then! Then there was the matter of Jason inquiring about Peter - Mrs. Hastings lied and told Jason her husband was out of town.
Spencer receives a knowing text message, "Don't be afraid Spence. We're all family here … -A"
Spencer goes to see Jason and asks him if her dad is his dad, too. Jason doesn't deny being Peter's son.
Spencer looks for her mother and confronts her. Spencer pushes Veronica (Lesley Fera) about Jason's paternity. Veronica tells her daughter she didn't know about Jason until he was almost an adult.
At the end of this episode, "A" steals Caleb's laptop out of his bag.
