Police: Whitney Houston Was 'Underwater,' 'Unconscious' In Bathtub When Discovered

Whitney Houston arrives to the Kelly Price & Friends Unplugged: For The Love Of R&B GRAMMY Party at Tru Hollywood, Hollywood, on February 9, 2012 -- FilmMagic

Authorities confirmed on Monday that Whitney Houston was submerged in a bathtub when she was first discovered on Saturday afternoon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

"She was underwater and apparently unconscious," the Beverly Hills Police Department confirmed in a release on Monday. "Ms. Houston was pulled from the tub by members of her staff and hotel security was promptly notified."

When Fire Department personnel arrived on the scene, first responders "observed Whitney Houston to still be unconscious and unresponsive," a release read.

"They initiated CPR, but were unable to revive her. At approximately 3:55 PM, Whitney Houston, age 48 was pronounced dead at the scene," the release continued.

In related news, at a press conference in Los Angeles on Monday, L.A. County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter told reporters that it is still too early to determine a cause of death.

"It's too early to say," Winter said when asked whether they'd ruled out drowning in the Houston case. "We don't know. The autopsy was done yesterday and there's still testing that is ongoing."

When asked about Houston's death - and in particular - how long her body had been in the bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel when she was discovered on Saturday afternoon, Winter said "within an hour."

"She was seen within an hour by somebody... family or somebody at the hotel -- and then she was discovered," he said.

Winter said the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office was doing routine toxicology tests, the results of which will influence the determination of Houston's exact cause of death.

When asked if Houston's body could be released on Monday, Winter said it depended on the family.

Houston is expected to be laid to rest in the town she was born in -- Newark, New Jersey -- later this week, sources told WNBC New York.

According to sources working with the family, arrangements are currently being worked out and her body could be flown in from Los Angeles as early as Monday, WNBC reported.

The station reported that Whigham Funeral Home will handle the ceremony, however, when reached by Access Hollywood on Monday, the establishment would not confirm - or deny -- the report.

The services of Lee Warrick, mother of Dionne Warwick, were also held at the Whigham Funeral Home in August 2005, a service Houston attended.

Dionne Warwick - Houston's cousin -- has postponed a concert planned for Tuesday in Pennsylvania, following her cousin's death.

If she was underwater and unconscious at the same time, then she drowned.

She probably drowned with drugs in her system, maybe they made her sleepy and she just passed out in the tub. So sad.

Once again...big houses, bigger egos...lonlier lives. This lady...has had one child..one husband...it's just not that easy in H'wood, to have it all....like one of her songs. From marilyn to anna nicole..to so many others. This and the others is a cautionary tale. They have a difficult time finding happiness...and keeping happiness just as anyone else. It is just not for the celebrities...this is speaking to everyone. It is easier than ever to try and find the "magic pills" to get us through it so to say. To seek and find contentment is not in a pipe and certainly not swimming round in a shot of bourbon on the rocks. It is difficult to "play the game" one day you will have to take a real, good and hard look in the mirror...and accept, live, work and stay on course. We can easily fall into this trap...of ..."everybody tells me I'm ok....so i must be ok". This so called support system should tell you...."Hey...you're not ok...matter of fact you're jacked up". Where is the alarm on this one?? We or someone...is dropping the ball. Recently Demi Moore...she was lucky...someone at least made a 911...that took some courage, because a lot of times these people are found dead. This is a tragedy what these famous and very wealthy people have sold themselves for....to be by themselves...to me...trapped...by hangers-on and tail coat riders. You have signed your own death warrent. You will be left alone alright....and possibly die alone.

I agree with Jason. No one but the family and the authorities need to know how she died. We need to respect the grieving family and maybe, just maybe feel a little sorry for ourselves that someone who gave us so much pleasure with her beautiful voice has been taken too soon.

Me, too. I've already heard about the two days leading up to her death and it wasn't pretty. The autopsy report will eventually be released and that will close it.

That's too bad, she was one who had an addictive personalty, drank too much, took to many numbing pills, fell asleep in the tub and drowned....she was great long time ago, after all the abuse she put herself through, she had lost that powerhouse of a voice......

u can best believe her voice is back, and that choir in heaven has one more angel to sing.
      RIP WHITNEY.

It was confirmed that she was back to drinking. She had picked up pills from a pharmacy on Thursday. This mixture is often fatal. Won't be surprised if this combo led to her death. I wanted her to beat these demons and be a winner!! Hate the addiction....love the person.

I also agree with Jason, but in this day and age, all someone has to do is offer 50 cents, and there it is.

drugs so what? we are all going to exit this world one way or the other. the end result is that , we all will be leaving someday. some yesterday, some today and some tomorrow.
    • whatafooliam  •  3 months ago
Another wasted life. Sadly insecure person with a great deal of talent, enablers around here her to find drugs to blunt the insecurities, unlimited money to buy it. lead to addiction and an early death.
In the early 80s she was the picture of a wholesome girl when she was introduced to the world, had she not had money she would have been turning tricks in East LA.

Studies find that the major cause of drowning is being under water!
    • Jason Sheffield  •  3 months ago
Is it really necessary to broadcast every detail? Leave it as she was found dead and leave the tacky details OUT. the police need this level of detail - no one else.

Show some respect for the woman who just died and her child that does NOT need to be reading this kind of tabloid garbage.
