'Phantom of the Opera' marking 10,000 shows in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — "The Phantom of the Opera" is making musical history on Broadway.

The production is celebrating its 10,000th performance Saturday in New York City's storied theater district.

The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/Ac4KnA ) reports that 2011 was the show's highest-earning year. The newspaper says the show made a record $1.5 million in its best week last year, in December, and has made $845 million overall.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical opened on Broadway on Jan. 26, 1988.

It is an adaptation of the French novel by Gaston Leroux.

The historic performance at the Majestic Theater included a giant cake and special curtain call.

I've seen it twice, back in the early 90's in Anaheim when I took a vacation to see my late sister (unfortunatly I lost her 5 years ago to colon cancer), then again when a tour came through Reno in the early 2000's. I purchased the video plus the CD, and I never tire of the music. One of the best. Congrats to the team.

I've seen it 3 times - twice in Atlanta and once in New York - and every time it was amazing. The special effects are the best, as well as, the music. The music is some of the most beautiful I have ever heard. I love all of it, the whole thing. My 3-yr old grandson had the music memorized in a week and still loves the P hantom at 16. The movie failed miserably to capture the magic of the play. My whole family loves the Phantom. Thanks, Andrew Lloyd Weber, for some of the most wonderful time spent enjoying your work.

Much as I love Phantom, this is a really poorly written, choppy article...

I saw this once in Toronto at the Pantages Theater (now called Canon Theater) and twice in Detroit at the Detroit Opera House. Amazing !!!!!!! The best Broadway show that ever was produced. The stats speak for themselves.

I love 'Phantom.' I've seen it in Denver, Sacramento, and London, and it has never disappointed me. Always good to see the arts continuing to thrive.

I saw an old, old, black and white movie, The Phantom of the Opera. It was so sad though some of the organ music was great.

It was a memorable show to see in NYC. My wife and I loved every minute of it. The story, the music, the tragedy, it was so passionate. I hope to see them again soon.

Only time that I saw the show was at the Venitian in Las Vegas where they built an entire
theatre just for the Phantom Show. The presentation there was unreal. Beautiful.
Love the music and the production in Vegas was something to witness. Doubt if there will
ever be another play/musical that will ever compare with the Phantom.

Congratulations Phantom. It is about time that something good happens in the US even if it was conceived by a Brit (no pun intended). This is better than reading about the POLS and the budget and dumb Odumbo or the wife politicizing schools and learning and diets. What happens on Broadway is ENTERTAINMENT which this country sorely needs right now.

Why isn't obama proclaiming that Broadway tickets be free?
      Think about it.
