Paul McCartney Promotes Vegetarianism In New PETA Ad

Access Hollywood - March 12, 2008 11:26 AM PDT

Paul McCartney is the latest star to be featured in an ad for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The former Beatle and longtime non-meat eater posed for a photo campaign for PETA with the slogan, "I am Paul McCartney and I am a vegetarian."

The ad campaign goes further, explaining McCartney had a moment when he realized he could no longer eat meat.

"Many years ago, I was fishing, and as I was reeling in the poor fish, I realized, 'I am killing him - all for the pleasure it brings me," he is quoted as saying in the campaign. "And something inside me clicked. I realized as I watched him fight for breath, that his life was as important to him as mine is to me."

McCartney previously posed for PETA wearing a shirt, which read "Stop Eating Animals."

McCartney has been a longtime supporter of vegetarianism. His fashion designer daughter, Stella, is also a supporter of PETA causes and refuses to use fur or leather in her designs.

PETA also has an award they hand out named after McCartney's late wife, Linda, who was a longtime animal rights activist.

I'm glad Paul is still supporting Peta. Linda would be proud!

Yhaa Peta get a grip! Although I do support your efforts for the most part. But REALLY come on I have a cat and a dog who are both spoiled so rotten I am teased about it all the time! I Love my pets as if I gave birth to them myself! They are very well taken care of in fact THEY come before me! PETA you need to lighten up just bit.

i have been a vegetarian for 35 years and do not miss the meat at all. there is a fairly new letter about cancer from John Hopkins Hospital and in there they mention meat as a good contributer to the growth of cancer. i had colon cancer about 16 years ago and the homeopath i was seeing said DO NOT eat meat wheat of dairy if you want to clear the cancer. it has not come back so the diet helped

I'm a veg-head and support Humane Society and the ASPCA. PETA was the one that turned me into a veggie with a photo of a pig on its way to slaughter - he could see the other pigs being killed and I'll never forget the look on his face. I don't insult other people who are eating meat. I think it's counter-productive, but I promote vegetarianism and anti-cruelty w

The less you eat meat, the less you want it. It is amazing how it works. I stopped eating meat altogether and now the thought of it makes me sick, literally. I cannot imagine eating a steak or any other form of meat. You do not have to, even the most simple vegetables have grams of protein in them. Honest. Check it out. I have more energy as a vegan. Okay, off my soapbox now.

I'M WORKING TOWARDS BECOMING A VEGAN(IT'S HARD BUT I'M DOWN TO FISH, CHICKEN AND TURKEY), BUT PETA HAS GOTTEN WEIRD AND ANNOYING. I SUPPORT THE HUMANE SOCIETY AND THE ASPCA BUT PETA IS JUST NOT MY CUP OF TEA. ACCORDING TO THEM IT'S CREUL FOR ME TO HAVE A CAT WHICH I TAKE TO THE VET MORE OFTEN THAN I GO TO THE DOCTOR AND IS SPOILED ROTTEN. WHATEVER.........
