"If you make it out of a crash of that magnitude, somebody's looking out for you," Bill Nosal - Barker's friend and spokesman for his clothing line Famous Stars and Straps - tells the Associated Press. "He's trying to stay upbeat."
Nosal says Barker was very close to two of the people who perished: Chris Baker, 29, was an assistant and "was like extended family," Nosal says. (Reps for Barker and DJ have denied reports that they flying on the jet because Baker's wife was in labor.)
Another victim, Charles Still, 25, was working as a security guard for Barker, who didn't always travel with one, Nosal said.
They were on a weekend trip to perform for about 10,000 people in a neighborhood near the University of South Carolina.
Before the crash, Perry Farrell told Usmagazine.com they had all performed "a great set.
"They were full of life and happiness, having done a great show," he said. "By the time we performed and got off stage, they had already headed out to fly home.
"I was in disbelief to learn what happened to all of them. I can still see how happy AM looked after his show," said Farrell. "What you have there is a moment in time that forces you to reflect on everything that is precious about your life. I wish for them to recover and grace the stage for us again."
