Over-the-Top Super Bowl Ads From Dot-Com Era

Super Bowl ads have a super-big job: To make a lasting impact in 30 seconds or less. Over the years, some of the ads have lasted longer than the companies that placed them (looking at you, Pets.com).

The dot-com boom, back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, is especially guilty of going all out for our viewing pleasure, dumping millions of dollars into commercial spots, and with questionable results. Clearly, it's pretty gosh-darned difficult to get a good return on a $2 million, 30-second investment. Here are some of the most over-the-top ads from back in the days of the dot-com bubble.

    E-Trade, "Wasted $2 Million" (2000)

This self-mocking gem from E-Trade was, well, blatantly honest. The ad features a monkey wearing a company T-shirt dancing on a trash can between two guys. The company still exists, but the investment firm is no longer wasting millions on Super Bowl ads and dancing monkeys.

Pets.com, "Please Don't Go: If You Leave Me Now" (2000)

The sock pocket pooch became the poster child for bad business ideas. Here, a sock pocket croons, while a sad-eyed dog, an resentful fluffy cat, and a crying lizard watch mournfully as their owners leave them to go off to "a lot of stores" to buy pet supplies.

    Monster.com, "When I Grow Up" (1999)

Children express their lowered hopes and dreams to "file all day," "be underappreciated," and "be paid less for doing the same job" when they grow up. Introduced in 1999, the popular spot continued to appear over the years.

    EDS, "Cat Herding" (2000)

You've probably never heard of EDS, a "data services" company founded in 1962 by H. Ross Perot. Before being acquired by Hewlett-Packard in 2008, it gave us the "most memorable ad of 2000."

I'm guessing the writer of this article hasn't watched the last few Super Bowls, when E-Trade "wasted" millions of dollars on Super Bowl ads featuring that talking baby.

The ones I like were the two lizards (Frank & Ernie) of the Bud commercials. Budweiser beer is still around. In fact the company is 3 days older than dirt and a week older than water.

Now that A/B is owned by InBev, the company is sinking fast!

I worked for EDS and We Were Cat Herders... nothing like doing whatever it took to "Herd Cats" and do the impossible on short notice. Then HP bought EDS and Mr. Hurd shamed us all, at HP and EDS. Then the EDS'ers had their pay cut buy 5%, + 1 month of an Extra 10%. Then HP slashed EDS'ers jobs to protect more of their own. WORST COMPANY EVER. HP that is. Buy a Dell.

Worst owners ever then, EDS that is. They sold to HP which you try to say was a sinking ship when they bought EDS. Well wait maybe EDS was sinking and NEEDED to sell. Naw, that's NEVER possible.

let's not forget Terry Tate: Office Linebacker (my personal favorite) -- it was pulled shortly after being shown; perhaps too violent ? although with what's on tv these days, i find that hard to believe.

Those were ESPN spots that those went to after the Superbowl. Those are awesome, they are on Youtube.

The Terrible Terry Tate Trilogy is actually a mainstay at my company's new hire training program videos. True story!

The "Absolute_BEST" ad was the Exploding Mosquito after biting the Cajun Guy eating "Tobasco_Enhanced_Pizza".

Oh, and odd thing is, EDS'ers Benfits are separate from HP's. And Unemployment said that EDS was still the company I worked for, when let go 1 year ago, but the "Merger" happen 2-3 years ago. Something isn't right with HP.

Best, by a landslide is still the Blockbuster ad with the mouse, squirel and raccoon standing outside a blockbuster store. They only showed it once.I think it's from 2006

E Trade is the Bud Light of Tech ads...the talking E Trade Baby is classic!
    • Hawksrule  •  4 months ago
Definitely some classics here; the "We just wasted $2 million" is great- you just can't beat a dancing chimp for entertainment value. Personally, I'd have to think that's why the Kardashians have maintained such popularity, but that's a different topic. Anyway, one question on the subject: Could somebody please tell me when in the name of God these ridiculous Kia commercials with the ghetto gerbils are going to go away, already? You know, they should add a touch of realism to these spots, like... A drive-by. In a Soul. (Or whatever those nauseating econo-boxes are called). That could be good for them.
